Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Apply before travel
Apply for an Azerbaijan eVisa at evisa.gov.az. The application takes about 15 minutes — you'll need a scanned passport page and a digital photo. Processing usually takes 3 working days, and the visa is valid for 30 days single entry.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for the entire stay
Your passport must be valid for at least the duration of your stay in Azerbaijan. Airlines may ask for 6 months validity beyond your departure date — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure
Immigration officers at Baku Heydar Aliyev Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready showing your exit from Azerbaijan within the eVisa's validity period.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel confirmation or a letter of invitation from your host in Azerbaijan. Border officers occasionally ask for this, especially if you're arriving without a pre-booked itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can cover your stay
Have bank statements or cash equivalent to at least $50 USD per day of your stay. Officers rarely check this for short visits, but it's safer to have evidence ready.Recommended
eVisa only for tourism and business
The eVisa is for short stays (up to 30 days) for tourism, business, or transit. If you plan to work or study, you need a different visa — contact the Azerbaijani embassy.
Passport validity counts from entry, not departure
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you land in Azerbaijan. If it expires sooner, renew it before applying for the eVisa.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the eVisa online
Go to evisa.gov.az and fill out the application. You'll need your passport details, travel dates, and a digital photo. Pay the fee (around $20–$25 USD) with a credit or debit card. Processing usually takes 3–5 business days.
2
Receive your eVisa by email
Once approved, you'll get a PDF visa via email. Print a copy and also save it on your phone. The visa is valid for 30 days from the date of issue.
3
Arrive at Heydar Aliyev International Airport (GYD)
At Baku airport, go to the 'Foreign Passports' queue. Present your passport, printed eVisa, and return ticket. The officer will stamp you in. The whole process takes 5–10 minutes if you have everything ready.
4
Show accommodation and onward ticket if asked
Immigration officers may ask for proof of where you're staying and your departure flight. Have your hotel booking and return ticket screenshot ready on your phone.

Frequently asked questions

Standard processing takes 3–5 business days. There's also an urgent option (3 hours) for about $50 USD. Apply at least a week before your flight to be safe.
No. The eVisa is not extendable. You must leave before it expires. If you need to stay longer, you'd have to exit and re-enter with a new visa.
A digital copy on your phone is usually accepted, but printing a backup is safer. Some airlines may ask for a printed copy at check-in.
You'll be denied boarding or entry. Renew your passport first, then apply for the eVisa with the new passport.
Yes, the eVisa is valid for entry at all international border crossings, including land borders from Georgia, Russia, Iran, and Turkey.
No, it's not required by law. But it's strongly recommended because medical costs in Azerbaijan can be high. A basic policy covering medical evacuation is a good idea.
Rejections are rare but can happen if you have a criminal record or incomplete application. You'll get a refund of the visa fee minus a processing fee. You can reapply with corrected information.
