Nepali passport holders need a visa to enter the United Kingdom. You must apply for a Standard Visitor visa before you travel — there is no visa-on-arrival or eVisa option for Nepali citizens. Plan ahead, as the application process involves an online form, an appointment at a visa application centre, and a decision that can take several weeks.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
UK visaYou must get this visa before you fly; you cannot get it on arrival in the UK.
Apply at a UK embassy or consulate
Nepali citizens must obtain a UK visa before travel. There is no eVisa option for Nepali passport holders. Apply at the nearest British embassy or visa application centre, well in advance of your planned travel date.Required
Passport validityIf your passport expires sooner, renew it before applying for your UK visa.
At least 6 months beyond your intended stay
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your intended date of departure from the UK. Check the expiry date before you apply for your visa.Required
Blank passport pagesThe border officer will stamp your passport when you arrive, so a blank page is needed.
At least 1 blank page
Your passport must have at least 1 blank page for the UK entry stamp. Ensure no pages are damaged or missing.Required
Return or onward ticketYou must show you plan to leave the UK; a one-way ticket may raise questions.
Proof of departure from the UK
Have a confirmed return or onward travel ticket showing you will leave the UK before your visa expires. This is typically checked at the border.Required
Proof of fundsBorder officers may ask how you will pay for your trip; have documents ready.
Sufficient money for your stay
Be ready to show evidence (bank statements, sponsor letter, or cash) that you can support yourself during your visit. The amount is not fixed but must cover accommodation, food, and other expenses.Required
Visa application documentsIncomplete applications can be refused, so double-check the checklist.
Supporting paperwork for your visa
Prepare all documents required for your UK visa application, including a valid passport, recent photographs, financial evidence, travel itinerary, and any invitation letters. Check the specific requirements for your visa type.Required
Arrival declarationNo online form or declaration is needed before you land.
UK arrival form
The UK does not require a separate arrival declaration for Nepali citizens. You will go through standard passport control. Not required
No eVisa — apply at the embassy/consulate
Nepali citizens are not eligible for the UK's eVisa system. You must go through the full visa application process: online form, biometric appointment at the VAC in Kathmandu, and document submission. Do not use unofficial eVisa websites — they are scams.
Plan for 3+ weeks
Standard processing takes around 3 weeks, but it can be longer during peak travel seasons (summer and Christmas). If you need a faster decision, consider priority processing (if available) — it costs extra but can cut the wait to 5 working days.
Visa is not extendable
The Standard Visitor visa cannot be extended in the UK. If you stay longer than your granted period, you risk being banned from future visits. Make sure your travel plans fit within the allowed stay.

What happens at the border

1
Complete the online application
Go to the official UK Visas and Immigration website and fill out the Standard Visitor visa form. You'll need to create an account, answer questions about your trip, and pay the £115 fee. After submitting, you'll be directed to book a biometric appointment.
2
Book and attend biometric appointment
Schedule an appointment at the UK Visa Application Centre in Kathmandu (operated by VFS Global). Bring your passport, appointment confirmation, and any supporting documents. At the appointment, your fingerprints and photo will be taken. You may also be asked to submit your passport for processing.
3
Submit supporting documents
Upload your supporting documents online before your appointment, or bring them to the VAC for scanning. The VAC staff will verify your documents and send them to the UK Home Office for review.
4
Wait for a decision
The UK Home Office typically processes Standard Visitor visas within 3 weeks. You can track your application online. If approved, your passport with the visa vignette will be returned to you via the VAC (either by courier or for collection).
5
Travel to the UK
On arrival in the UK, go through Border Control. Have your passport with the visa vignette ready. The Border Force officer may ask about your trip — answer honestly. You'll usually be stamped in for up to 6 months, but the exact duration is at the officer's discretion.

Frequently asked questions

Standard processing takes about 3 weeks from the date of your biometric appointment. However, it can take longer during peak seasons. You can pay for priority processing (currently around £250 extra) to get a decision within 5 working days, if available.
Yes, the application form is completed online. But you must attend an in-person biometric appointment at the UK Visa Application Centre in Kathmandu. There is no way to avoid the appointment.
No. Nepali passport holders are not eligible for the UK's eVisa system. You must apply for a Standard Visitor visa through the embassy/consulate process, which includes the online form and biometric appointment.
The Standard Visitor visa allows a stay of up to 6 months. However, the Border Force officer at the port of entry decides the exact length of stay, and it can be less than 6 months. You cannot extend this visa while in the UK.
No. The Standard Visitor visa is for tourism, visiting family, or short business activities (like meetings). You cannot take up employment or enroll in a course longer than 30 days. For work or study, you need a different visa category.
Provide evidence of strong ties to Nepal, such as a letter from your employer, property ownership documents, family commitments, or enrollment at a Nepali institution. Bank statements showing sufficient funds for the trip also help. The more evidence you provide, the stronger your case.
You'll receive a refusal notice explaining the reasons. You can reapply with new evidence, but the application fee is not refunded. There is no appeal for visitor visa refusals, but you can request an administrative review if you believe an error was made.
