Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Schengen visa application
Apply at the Italian embassy or visa center
You need a Schengen visa before traveling to Italy. Apply at the Italian embassy or consulate in Nepal — processing takes at least 15 calendar days. Submit your application through the official Italy Visa Portal at vistoperitalia.esteri.it.Apply for Schengen visaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from Schengen area
Your passport needs at least two blank pages for visa stamps. The 3-month validity rule applies to your entire stay in the Schengen zone — not just Italy. Airlines check this at check-in.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Schengen area
Immigration officers at Italian airports routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you leave the Schengen zone within your visa's validity. Budget airlines sometimes check this before boarding.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation letter
Have a confirmed hotel reservation or a formal letter of invitation from your host in Italy. Immigration may ask for this at the border, especially if you're staying more than a few days.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Carry bank statements or a credit card showing access to at least €50 per day of your stay. Italian border officers rarely ask for this, but having it ready avoids delays.Recommended
Apply well in advance
Visa processing can take 3-4 weeks, and appointments may be limited. Don't wait until the last minute — start your application at least 6 weeks before your planned departure.
Schengen zone rules
An Italian visa lets you travel to all 27 Schengen countries (France, Germany, Spain, etc.) for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. But you must enter through Italy or spend the most time there.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for a Schengen visa at the Italian embassy
Submit your application at the Italian Embassy in Kathmandu (or the consulate covering your area). Book an appointment online, fill out the Schengen visa application form, and bring all required documents. Processing takes 15-30 days.
2
Wait for visa approval
After your appointment, the embassy will process your visa. You may be called for an interview. Once approved, your passport will be returned with the visa sticker.
3
Arrive in Italy and go through immigration
At the airport (e.g., Rome Fiumicino, Milan Malpensa), join the 'Non-EU' queue. Hand over your passport with the visa. The officer may ask for your return ticket, accommodation proof, and travel insurance. Answer clearly. They'll stamp your passport — that's your entry.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, you need a Schengen visa. Apply at the Italian embassy in Kathmandu before you travel. There is no visa-on-arrival or e-visa for tourism.
Processing usually takes 15-30 days. Apply at least 4-6 weeks before your trip to be safe. During peak season (summer), it can take longer.
You'll need a valid passport (6+ months validity, 1 blank page), completed application form, passport-sized photos, flight itinerary, hotel bookings, travel insurance (€30,000 coverage), bank statements (last 3 months), and proof of employment or leave.
The Schengen visa fee is about €80 for adults (roughly NPR 11,500). There may be additional service fees charged by the visa application center. Check the embassy website for current rates.
Extensions are rarely granted for tourism. You must leave before your visa expires. Overstaying can result in fines, deportation, or a ban from the Schengen area.
You will be denied entry and sent back on the next available flight. Airlines also check for visas before boarding, so you won't even be allowed to fly.
If you are transiting through an Italian airport to a non-Schengen destination and staying airside, you generally do not need a visa. But if you need to enter Italy (e.g., to switch airports or stay overnight), you need a Schengen visa.
