Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your departure date from Estonia
Your passport needs at least 3 months of validity after your planned exit from Estonia. This is a Schengen-wide rule — border officers in Tallinn check it. Airlines also enforce this before boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for Schengen entry
Immigration at Tallinn Airport asks for proof of onward travel — a return flight, a train ticket to Riga, or a ferry to Helsinki all work. Budget airlines like Ryanair and Wizz Air check this at check-in too.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Border officers may ask where you're staying. A hotel confirmation email or a letter from a friend in Estonia with their address is enough. Have it accessible on your phone.Recommended
Proof of funds
Around €100 per day of stay
Estonia doesn't have a fixed daily minimum published, but €100 per day is a safe benchmark. A bank statement or credit card with available limit works. I've never been asked for it, but keep it handy.Recommended
Schengen 90/180-day rule applies
Your 90-day visa-free stay is for the entire Schengen area, not just Estonia. Days spent in any Schengen country count toward your 90-day limit. Keep track of your travel dates.
Border checks at all entry points
Estonia is part of the Schengen area, but it maintains border checks at all entry points (air, land, sea). Always carry your passport when crossing into or out of Estonia.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Tallinn Airport or border crossing
Most travellers fly into Tallinn Airport (TLL). Follow signs to 'Passport Control' — there are separate queues for EU and non-EU citizens. Join the 'All Passports' or 'Non-EU' queue.
2
Present your passport and supporting documents
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask about the purpose of your visit, how long you're staying, and where you're staying. Have your return ticket and accommodation confirmation ready if asked.
3
Get your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the date of entry and the number of days you're allowed to stay (usually 90). Check the stamp before leaving the counter.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After passport control, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. Green channel for goods under €430, red channel if you have something to declare.
