Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your New Zealand passport must be valid for the entire period you plan to stay in El Salvador. Immigration officers at San Salvador Airport check this at the counter. No minimum validity beyond your departure date is required.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from El Salvador
Immigration at Comalapa Airport will ask for a printed or digital onward ticket showing you leave within 180 days. Budget airlines like Volaris and Avianca check this before boarding. Have the confirmation ready on your phone or printed.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Officers occasionally ask for a hotel reservation or a letter from your host. A booking confirmation from Booking.com or Airbnb works. Keep a copy on your phone.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
You may be asked to show cash, credit cards, or bank statements covering your stay. There is no fixed minimum amount, but having at least $500 USD or a credit card with available credit is a safe bet.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Immigration officers count 6 months from your arrival date, not your departure. If your passport expires sooner, you'll be turned away. Renew before you go.
No visa, no fee, no forms
This is one of the simplest entries in Central America. No online registration, no payment, no arrival card. Just your passport and a return ticket.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at San Salvador International Airport (SAL)
Most travellers fly into Comalapa International Airport. After landing, follow signs to 'Migración' (Immigration). The queue moves reasonably fast — expect 15–30 minutes during peak hours.
2
Present your documents at the immigration counter
Hand over your passport and any supporting documents if asked. The officer will check your passport validity, stamp you in, and note your allowed stay (usually 180 days). No forms to fill out.
3
Collect your luggage and proceed to customs
After immigration, grab your bags from the carousel. Customs is usually a green/red channel system — if you have nothing to declare, walk through the green channel.
4
Exit the arrivals hall
Once through customs, you're free to leave. Taxis and ride-shares are available outside. Keep your passport handy — you may need it for hotel check-in.
