Prepare your documents

Arrive at a South African airport
You'll go through immigration at OR Tambo (Johannesburg), Cape Town International, or King Shaka (Durban). Join the 'Foreign Passports' queue. Have your passport, boarding pass, and return ticket ready.

Present your documents to the immigration officer
Hand over your passport and any requested documents. The officer will check your passport validity, ask about your trip (purpose, duration, where you're staying), and may ask to see your return ticket or accommodation booking.

Receive your entry stamp
If everything is in order, the officer will stamp your passport with a visitor's entry permit valid for up to 90 days. Check the stamp before leaving the counter — make sure the date is correct.

Collect your luggage and proceed to customs
After immigration, collect your bags from the carousel, then walk through customs. There's usually nothing to declare for personal items, but if you have goods over ZAR 5,000 (approx. USD 280), use the red channel.
