Visa-free doesn't mean no rules
You're entering as a visitor, not a resident. Stick to tourism, business meetings, or family visits. Don't work, study, or overstay — the consequences are serious.
Passport validity is critical
Chinese immigration strictly enforces the 6-month passport validity rule. If your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied boarding or entry. Check your passport now, not at the airport.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at a Chinese port of entry
Fly into any major international airport like Beijing Capital, Shanghai Pudong, or Guangzhou. You'll go through immigration control — just join the queue for 'Foreigners' or 'All Passports'.
2
Present your passport and any requested documents
Hand over your passport to the immigration officer. They may ask about your purpose of visit, where you're staying, and how long you plan to stay. Answer clearly and honestly. Have your return ticket and hotel booking ready if asked.
3
Receive your entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the date of entry and the allowed stay duration (usually 30 days). Check the stamp before leaving the counter to make sure it's correct.
4
Proceed to baggage claim and customs
After clearing immigration, collect your luggage and walk through customs. If you have nothing to declare, use the green channel. Keep your passport handy — you may need to show it again at the exit.

Frequently asked questions

No. The visa-free entry is not extendable. If you need to stay longer, you must leave China before the 30 days are up and re-enter, or apply for a proper visa at a Chinese embassy or consulate before you travel.
Overstaying is taken seriously. You'll likely face a fine of about 500 RMB per day (up to 10,000 RMB), possible detention, and a ban from re-entering China. Don't risk it — leave on time.
If you're staying at a hotel, they'll register you automatically. If you're staying in a private residence, you must register with the local police station within 24 hours of arrival. Your host should help you with this.
No. Visa-free entry is only for tourism, business visits, or visiting family. Any paid work, volunteering, or formal study requires a proper visa or work permit. Doing otherwise is illegal and can get you deported.
If you're just transiting and staying within the allowed transit time (usually 24-144 hours depending on the city), you may not need a visa at all. But if you plan to leave the airport and stay longer, the 30-day visa-free entry applies — just make sure you meet the conditions.
As of 2026, Omani citizens can enter China visa-free for up to 30 days. Always check the latest travel advisories from your government and the Chinese embassy before you fly, as rules can change.
The local currency is the Chinese Yuan Renminbi (CNY). You can exchange money at banks, airports, and hotels, but it's easier to use Alipay or WeChat Pay for most transactions. Have some cash for small vendors and taxis.
