Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from Bulgaria. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Bulgaria
Immigration officers at Sofia Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed copy or show it on your phone — a bus or train ticket to a neighboring Schengen country also works.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel confirmation or a letter from your host with their address and phone number. Border officers occasionally ask for it, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Have access to at least €50 per day of your stay — a bank statement or credit card works. Officers rarely check this for short visits, but it's a legal requirement under Bulgarian immigration rules.Recommended
Passport validity is critical
Bulgaria strictly enforces the 6-month passport validity rule. If your passport expires sooner, you will be denied entry — no exceptions. Check your passport before booking flights.
Keep a copy of your return ticket
Immigration officers at Sofia Airport often ask to see proof of onward travel. A screenshot on your phone is fine, but a printed copy is even better in case your phone dies.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare documents before departure
Print or save digital copies of your passport, return ticket, accommodation booking, and insurance. Keep them in a folder or on your phone for quick access.
2
Arrive at Bulgarian border control
At Sofia Airport or any land border, join the queue for non-EU/non-Schengen passports. Have your passport and supporting documents ready. The officer will check your passport validity, stamp you in, and ask about your stay purpose and length.
3
Receive entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the entry date and the allowed stay (up to 90 days). Check the stamp before leaving the counter — if it's wrong, ask for correction immediately.

Frequently asked questions

No, the visa-free stay is not extendable. You must leave Bulgaria (or the Schengen area) before the 90 days are up. Overstaying can result in fines, deportation, or a ban from re-entering.
If you're a Peruvian passport holder transiting through a Bulgarian airport and not leaving the international transit area, you do not need a visa. But if you need to enter Bulgaria (e.g., to switch terminals or stay overnight), the visa-free rules apply — you can stay up to 90 days.
Border officers may deny entry. Renew your passport before traveling. The 6-month validity is counted from your entry date, not your departure date.
No. Visa-free entry is for tourism, business meetings, or short visits. For work or study, you need the appropriate visa or permit. Contact the Bulgarian embassy in Lima for details.
Not strictly required for visa-free entry, but it's strongly recommended. Medical costs in Bulgaria can be high, and insurance covers emergencies, repatriation, and trip disruptions.
Overstaying is a violation. You may face a fine (typically around 100-500 BGN), deportation, and a re-entry ban. Always track your days carefully.
If you stay longer than 90 days (which is not allowed on visa-free), you'd need to register. For stays under 90 days, no registration is required. Just keep your passport with the entry stamp.
