Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Apply for an eVisa before travel
You must apply for an Iraqi eVisa at the official portal before departure. The eVisa allows a single entry for tourism or business. Processing takes a few business days — apply at least a week before your flight.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Passport validity requirements
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended stay in Iraq. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Iraq
Immigration officers at Baghdad and Erbil airports routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight itinerary ready. Without one, you risk being refused entry.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a confirmed hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host in Iraq. Immigration may ask where you are staying — having a printed booking avoids delays.Recommended
Proof of funds
Financial means for your stay
Have bank statements or cash showing you can cover your expenses in Iraq. While not always checked, officers can ask for proof of funds if they suspect you cannot support yourself.Recommended
Apply early — processing is unpredictable
The eVisa can take anywhere from a few days to two weeks. Don't book non-refundable flights until you have the visa in hand.
Keep digital and printed copies of everything
You'll need your eVisa PDF at check-in and at immigration. A printed copy is safest — phone screens can die or fail.
Travel insurance is strongly recommended
Medical costs in Iraq are high and out-of-pocket. A basic travel insurance policy can save you thousands if something goes wrong.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the eVisa online
Go to the official Iraqi eVisa website (evisa.iq) and fill out the application. Upload a digital passport photo and a scan of your passport bio page. Pay the fee online. Processing can take a few days to a couple of weeks, so apply at least 2 weeks before your trip.
2
Receive and print your eVisa
Once approved, you'll get a PDF via email. Print a copy and save a digital version on your phone. You'll need to show it at check-in and upon arrival in Iraq.
3
Prepare your documents for departure
At the airport in Peru, the airline will check your eVisa, passport validity, and onward ticket. Have all documents ready to avoid delays.
4
Arrive at an Iraqi airport and go through immigration
At Baghdad International Airport or other international airports, follow signs to 'Arrivals' and 'Passport Control'. Present your passport, printed eVisa, and return ticket. The officer may ask about your accommodation and purpose of visit. Answer clearly. After stamping, you're in.
