Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to stay in Vatican City. Since Vatican City is inside Schengen territory, border officers may also apply the Schengen rule requiring 6 months of validity beyond your departure date — airlines sometimes enforce this too.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of onward travel
Immigration at Vatican City's entry points (usually through Rome) may ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight booking ready — budget airlines check this before boarding.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Carry a hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host in Vatican City. Border officers rarely ask for it, but having it ready avoids delays.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Have bank statements or cash equivalent to at least €50 per day of your stay. Officers almost never check this for short visits, but it's a standard Schengen requirement.Recommended
Vatican City is a separate country
Even though it's inside Rome, Vatican City has its own immigration rules. You'll get a separate entry stamp in your passport. Make sure you have a blank page for it.
No visa extensions
You cannot extend your 90-day visa-free stay. If you need more time, you must apply for a visa before traveling. Overstaying can lead to fines and future entry bans.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at the Vatican border
Vatican City is landlocked within Rome. You'll enter on foot from St. Peter's Square or through the Vatican Museums entrance. There's no airport — you fly into Rome (FCO or CIA) and then take a taxi, bus, or metro to the Vatican.
2
Join the immigration queue
At the Vatican border checkpoint, join the line for non-EU/non-Schengen visitors. Have your passport ready. The queue moves quickly — usually 5–15 minutes.
3
Present your documents
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask your purpose of visit (tourism), how long you're staying, and where you're staying. Answer clearly. They rarely ask for return tickets or insurance, but have them ready on your phone.
4
Receive your entry stamp
The officer stamps your passport with the entry date. Check the stamp is correct before stepping away. You're now legally in Vatican City.
5
Exit before 90 days
When you leave, you'll get an exit stamp at the same checkpoint. Don't overstay — fines and future Schengen bans apply.

Frequently asked questions

No. Peruvian passport holders can enter visa-free for up to 90 days. Just make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months from your entry date.
Up to 90 days per visit. This is a single stay limit — if you leave and re-enter, the clock resets. Overstaying can lead to fines and future entry bans.
No. Extensions are not available for visa-free visitors. You must leave before day 90. If you need to stay longer, you'd need to apply for a visa from a Vatican embassy before travel.
Your valid passport is the main requirement. Immigration may also ask for a return ticket and proof of accommodation. Have digital copies on your phone just in case.
No, it's not required for entry. But it's strongly recommended — medical costs in Vatican City can be high, and insurance covers emergencies.
Yes. Vatican City is an independent state within Rome, but there are no border controls between Italy and Vatican City for tourists. You can walk in freely from St. Peter's Square. However, you still need a valid passport for the Vatican's own entry stamp.
Overstaying is a violation of Vatican immigration law. You may be fined, banned from re-entering for a period, and it could affect future Schengen visa applications. Always leave before day 90.
