Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport must be valid for at least the duration of your stay in Costa Rica. Airlines at Manila (MNL) and connecting hubs check this before boarding. No 6-month validity rule applies for Costa Rica.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Costa Rica
Immigration officers at San José (SJO) routinely ask for a return or onward ticket within 30 days. Airlines also check this at check-in. Have a printed or digital copy ready.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Officers may ask for a hotel reservation or a letter from your host covering your entire stay. A booking confirmation from Booking.com or Airbnb works. Keep a copy on your phone.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Costa Rica asks for proof of at least $100 per day of stay. A bank statement or credit card with a sufficient limit works. I've seen officers ask for this at SJO, so have it accessible.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Costa Rica requires your passport to be valid for at least 6 months from your entry date. Airlines check this at check-in. If your passport expires sooner, you won't be allowed to board.
No visa, but don't skip the basics
You don't need a visa, but you must have a return ticket and a passport valid for 6+ months. Keep digital copies of everything on your phone.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before you fly
Check your passport validity (6+ months from entry date), print or screenshot your return ticket and first night's hotel booking. Save everything to your phone as backup.
2
Arrive at Juan Santamaría or Daniel Oduber airport
You'll land at San José (SJO) or Liberia (LIR). Follow signs to 'Migración' — the immigration hall. Queues can be 30–60 minutes during peak hours.
3
Present your passport and documents to the officer
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask for your return ticket and hotel address. Answer clearly. They'll stamp you in for up to 30 days.
4
Collect your luggage and proceed to customs
After immigration, grab your bags from the carousel. You'll pass through customs — green channel if nothing to declare, red if you have goods over $500 or restricted items.
