Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for at least the length of your stay in Rwanda. Airlines at departure check this before boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Rwanda
Immigration officers at Kigali International Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host. Immigration may ask for it if you look uncertain about where you're staying.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient money for your stay
Have access to at least $100–$200 USD per day of your stay. A bank statement or credit card works — immigration rarely asks, but it's safer to have it.Recommended
Visa-free entry is new
Rwanda introduced visa-free travel for all African passport holders (including Pakistan) in 2024. This policy is still being rolled out, so some airline check-in staff may not be familiar with it. Carry a printout of the official Rwanda immigration policy or this page to show if needed.
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Rwanda immigration will deny entry if your passport has less than 6 months validity from your date of entry. Airlines also check this before boarding. Double-check your passport's expiry date before booking flights.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before departure
Check your passport validity (6+ months from entry date), print or save your return/onward ticket, and have your first night's accommodation booking ready. No visa application is needed.
2
Arrive at Kigali International Airport (or land border)
At Kigali Airport, follow signs to 'Immigration' or 'Arrivals'. Join the queue for foreign nationals. Have your passport, boarding pass, and return ticket ready. The officer will stamp your passport — no fee, no form.
3
Receive your entry stamp
The immigration officer will stamp your passport with 'Visa Free' and a 30-day stay. Check the stamp before leaving the counter — make sure the dates are correct. If you need more time, ask about extensions at the Rwanda Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration in Kigali.
