Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Apply before travel
You need an eVisa to enter Somalia. Apply through the official Somalia Ministry of Foreign Affairs portal at mfa.gov.so. Processing times vary — apply at least 2 weeks before your flight.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for duration of stay
Your passport must be valid for the entire time you plan to stay in Somalia. No minimum validity beyond your departure date is required by Somali immigration, but airlines may enforce 6 months validity — check with your carrier.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of onward travel
Immigration at Mogadishu and Hargeisa airports checks for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight itinerary ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel reservation confirmation or a letter of invitation from your host in Somalia. Immigration may ask where you're staying, especially if you're arriving without a pre-arranged tour operator.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Have bank statements or cash equivalent to at least $500 USD for a short stay. Somalia is a cash economy — bring enough US dollars in small denominations for your trip.Recommended
Cash is king in Somalia
Somalia is a cash-based economy. Credit cards are rarely accepted, and ATMs are scarce. Bring enough USD in small denominations ($1, $5, $10 bills) to cover your entire stay. Larger bills ($50, $100) can be hard to break.
Medical evacuation is essential
Medical facilities in Somalia are extremely limited. A serious injury or illness will require evacuation to Nairobi or elsewhere, costing thousands of dollars. Travel insurance with medical evacuation coverage is not optional — it's a must.
Yellow fever vaccine required
If you're arriving from a country with yellow fever risk (including transit), you'll need to show a yellow fever vaccination certificate. Get the vaccine at least 10 days before travel.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the eVisa online
Go to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs portal, fill in your details, upload a passport photo and a scan of your passport bio page, and pay the fee. You'll receive an approval letter by email in 2–5 business days. Print it out.
2
Prepare your documents for the airport
Before heading to the airport, make sure you have: your printed eVisa approval, passport with at least 6 months validity, return ticket, and hotel booking. Airlines at Karachi, Lahore, or Islamabad will check these before issuing a boarding pass.
3
Arrive at Mogadishu or Hargeisa airport
Most flights from Pakistan arrive at Aden Adde International Airport (MGQ) in Mogadishu or Egal International Airport (HGA) in Hargeisa. After landing, follow signs to immigration.
4
Go through immigration
At the immigration counter, hand over your passport, printed eVisa, and return ticket. The officer may ask a few questions (purpose of visit, where you're staying). Answer clearly. They'll stamp your passport and let you through.
5
Collect your luggage and exit
After immigration, proceed to baggage claim. Then head to customs — declare any large amounts of cash (over $10,000 USD). Once cleared, you're free to enter Somalia.
