Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Polish passport only needs to be valid for the time you plan to stay in Bulgaria. Airlines sometimes ask for 3 months validity beyond departure — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Bulgaria
Immigration officers at Sofia and Burgas airports routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready showing you leave within the 90-day Schengen limit.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Border officers may ask where you're staying. Carry a hotel confirmation, Airbnb receipt, or a letter from your host with their address and phone number.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Have a bank statement or cash equivalent to roughly 100 BGN per day of your stay. Officers rarely ask, but it's a legal requirement — keep a screenshot of your balance handy.Recommended
Bulgaria is not in Schengen
Even though Bulgaria is an EU member, it's not part of the Schengen Area. Your 90-day visa-free stay in Bulgaria is separate from the 90 days you may spend in Schengen countries. Keep track of both.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before departure
Check your passport validity (6+ months from entry), print or save your return ticket, accommodation booking, and insurance documents. Have them easily accessible on your phone or in a folder.
2
Arrive at Sofia Airport or another Bulgarian entry point
At passport control, join the queue for non-EU/non-Schengen travellers (even though Bulgaria is in the EU, it's not yet in Schengen). Hand over your passport and be ready to show your return ticket and accommodation if asked. The officer will stamp your passport.
3
Collect your luggage and exit
After passport control, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. There are no additional forms or fees for Polish citizens.
