Frequently asked questions

Yes, the visa on arrival is available at all international airports (Kotoka in Accra, Kumasi, Tamale) and at major land border crossings like Aflao (Togo border) and Elubo (Côte d'Ivoire border). The process is the same — fill out a form, pay $150 USD, get your visa.
It's valid for 30 days from the date of issue. You can extend it once for another 30 days at the Ghana Immigration Service headquarters in Accra. The extension costs about $50 USD and takes a few hours.
You must pay in US dollars. There are currency exchange booths at the airport, but they may not give you the best rate. Best to bring the exact amount in crisp, new bills. Old or damaged notes may be refused.
Yes, it's mandatory for entry into Ghana. You must show your yellow fever vaccination certificate (the 'yellow card') at immigration. Without it, you may be denied entry or forced to get vaccinated at the airport (which costs extra and takes time).
Yes, you can apply for an e-visa online before you travel. It costs $100 USD and takes 3-5 business days to process. The e-visa is valid for 30 days. Many travellers prefer the visa on arrival because it's simpler, but the e-visa saves you time at the airport.
Overstaying is taken seriously. You'll be fined about $20 USD per day over the limit, and you may be questioned by immigration. If you need more time, apply for an extension before your visa expires.
No, there's no registration requirement for short stays. Just keep your passport and visa with you at all times. If you're staying longer than 30 days, the extension process covers any registration.
