Polish passport holders don't need a visa for Hungary. As an EU citizen, you can enter, live, and work freely under EU freedom of movement rules. This has been the case since Poland joined the EU in 2004 and remains unchanged in 2026.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the entire stay
Your Polish passport needs to be valid for the entire time you're in Hungary. Since you're entering the Schengen zone, the 90/180-day rule applies across all Schengen countries, not just Hungary.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Schengen area
Immigration officers at Budapest Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you'll leave the Schengen zone within 90 days. Budget airlines check this before boarding.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have a hotel confirmation or a letter from your host ready. Border officers may ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Carry a bank statement or credit card showing you have enough money for your stay. Schengen rules suggest roughly €100 per day, but enforcement at Budapest is usually relaxed for EU citizens.Recommended
EU freedom of movement
As a Polish citizen, you enjoy full EU freedom of movement in Hungary. No visa, no work permit, no residency permit for stays under 3 months. Just bring your passport or ID card.
Passport validity counts from entry date
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you land in Hungary, not from your departure date. If it expires sooner, renew it before you go.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Budapest Airport (BUD) or other entry point
You'll land at Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD) or another Schengen border. As an EU citizen, use the EU/EEA queue — it's usually faster. Have your passport ready.
2
Present your passport to border control
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask your purpose of visit (tourism, business, family) and how long you're staying. Answer briefly and honestly. They rarely ask for supporting documents for EU citizens, but have your return ticket and accommodation confirmation accessible.
3
Receive entry stamp (optional)
As an EU citizen, you don't get a stamp unless you request one. If you want a record of entry, ask politely. Otherwise, just walk through.
4
Collect luggage and exit
After passport control, collect your bags from the carousel and proceed through customs (green channel for most). You're now in Hungary.
