Portuguese passport holders can visit the UK for up to 180 days without a visa for tourism, business, or family visits. You must meet entry requirements at the border. This applies in 2026.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
ETA application
Electronic Travel Authorisation
Since January 8, 2025, you need an ETA before flying to the UK. Apply at gov.uk/apply-uk-visa — the £10 fee covers multiple trips over 2 years. Approval usually comes within minutes, but apply at least 48 hours before departure.Apply for ETARequired
Valid passport
Must cover entire stay
Your Portuguese passport must be valid for the whole time you're in the UK. No minimum validity period beyond your stay is required — unlike some other countries.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure
Immigration officers routinely ask for proof you're leaving within 180 days. Have a return flight or onward ticket ready — a bus or ferry booking to Ireland also works.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel confirmation or a letter from your host with their address and contact number. Border officers rarely ask, but not having it can delay entry.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statement or cash
Have a recent bank statement or credit card showing you can support yourself. No fixed amount is published, but £50–100 per day is a safe benchmark.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you enter the UK. If it expires sooner, renew it before you travel. Border Force will turn you away.
No visa needed, but entry is not guaranteed
Even without a visa, the Border Force officer can refuse entry if they're not satisfied with your purpose, funds, or documents. Always carry proof of your return ticket and accommodation.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at UK border control
At airports like Heathrow, Gatwick, or Manchester, join the 'All Other Passports' queue. Have your passport, return ticket, and accommodation details ready. The Border Force officer will ask about your trip purpose, length of stay, and where you're staying.
2
Present your documents
Hand over your passport and any supporting documents if asked. Answer questions clearly. The officer will stamp your passport with the entry date and the date you must leave (usually 180 days later).
3
Collect your belongings and exit
Once stamped, proceed to baggage claim and customs. You're now legally in the UK. Keep your passport safe — you'll need it for hotel check-ins and any ID checks.
