Portuguese passport holders can visit Ireland for tourism or business for up to 90 days without a visa. This has been the case since 2024. Ensure your passport is valid and you have the required documents ready for immigration.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Portuguese passport needs to be valid only for the dates you plan to be in Ireland. Ireland does not enforce the 6-month validity rule for EU/EEA nationals. Airlines rarely check this, but carry your passport card as backup.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Ireland
Immigration officers at Dublin and Shannon airports routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. A flight booking to another Schengen country or back to Portugal works. Budget airlines like Ryanair also check this at check-in.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have a hotel confirmation, hostel booking, or a letter from your host in Ireland ready. Officers rarely ask EU citizens for this, but it speeds things up if you're staying more than a few days.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statement or cash
Carry a recent bank statement or credit card showing you can cover your stay. There's no fixed amount, but having €50–€100 per day visible in your account avoids questions.Recommended
Common Travel Area (CTA) note
Ireland is part of the Common Travel Area with the UK. If you have a valid UK visa or residence permit, you can enter Ireland without a separate visa. But as a Portuguese passport holder, you don't need any visa anyway.
Passport validity counts from entry, not departure
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you land in Ireland. If it expires sooner, renew it before you travel — even if you plan to leave before it expires.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before you queue
Have your passport, return ticket, and accommodation confirmation ready before you reach the immigration officer. At Dublin Airport, the non-EU queue can be long — having everything in hand speeds things up.
2
Approach the immigration officer
Hand over your passport and any requested documents. The officer will ask a few questions: purpose of visit, where you're staying, how long. Answer clearly and honestly. They'll stamp your passport and you're in.
3
Collect your luggage and exit
After passing immigration, head to baggage claim, then customs. Green channel for most tourists. That's it — you're in Ireland.
