Portuguese passport holders need an eVisa to visit India for tourism, business, or medical purposes. The eVisa is valid for 60 days from arrival, with a maximum stay of 30 days per visit. As of 2026, the application is entirely online and typically processed within 72 hours.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Apply online before travel
Apply for an Indian eVisa at indianvisaonline.gov.in at least 4 days before departure. Fees range from $25 to $80 USD depending on the visa type (tourist, business, medical). Approval usually arrives within 72 hours — print the approval email and carry it with your passport.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for 6 months beyond arrival
Your Portuguese passport needs at least 6 months of validity from your date of arrival in India. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for entry
Immigration officers at Indian airports routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return flight or a ticket to your next destination ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Recommended to carry
Hotel bookings or a letter of invitation from your host in India can speed up the immigration process. Officers rarely demand it, but having it avoids delays.Recommended
Proof of funds
Recommended to carry
Carry evidence of sufficient funds for your stay — a bank statement or credit card works. Immigration rarely checks, but it is a formal requirement under Indian visa rules.Recommended
eVisa is not for all purposes
The eVisa is for tourism, business, medical, or conference visits only. If you plan to work, study, or volunteer in India, you need a different visa. Applying for an eVisa with the wrong purpose can lead to rejection and a ban.
Keep a printed copy of your eVisa
While digital copies are accepted at some airports, many immigration officers prefer a printed copy. Print it and keep it with your passport. Also save a PDF on your phone as backup.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the eVisa online
Go to the official Indian eVisa website (indianvisaonline.gov.in/evisa/tvoa.html). Fill in your personal and passport details, upload a passport-style photo and a scan of your passport bio page. Pay the fee (around $25–$100 depending on visa type and processing speed). Submit and wait for approval — usually within 72 hours.
2
Print or save the eVisa approval
Once approved, you'll receive an email with the eVisa document. Print a copy and also save a PDF on your phone. Immigration at Indian airports will ask to see it.
3
Arrive at an Indian airport with eVisa facilities
The eVisa is valid for entry at 28 designated airports, including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Goa, and Kochi. At immigration, join the 'eVisa' queue. Have your passport, eVisa printout, and return ticket ready. The officer will stamp your passport and you're in.
4
Collect baggage and exit
After immigration, collect your luggage from the carousel. If you have nothing to declare, go through the green channel. If you have goods over the duty-free limit, use the red channel.

Frequently asked questions

Standard processing takes 72 hours, but it can be as fast as 24 hours. Apply at least 4 days before your flight to be safe. There's also an urgent option (24 hours) for an extra fee.
No, the eVisa is not extendable. You must leave India before the 30-day stay limit. If you need to stay longer, you'd need to apply for a different visa type (like a tourist visa) from a Portuguese consulate before travel.
You won't be allowed to board your flight or enter India. Renew your passport first, then apply for the eVisa. The 6-month validity is strictly enforced.
Not usually, but it's smart to have a credit card or bank statement handy. Immigration officers rarely ask, but if they do, showing a card or a few hundred euros in cash is enough.
No, only at 28 designated airports. Major ones include Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Kochi, Goa, and Ahmedabad. If you're flying into a smaller airport, check if it's on the list. You can also enter through 5 seaports (like Mumbai and Chennai) if arriving by cruise.
Rejections are rare for Portuguese passport holders, but if it happens, you'll get a reason. Common issues: incorrect photo, passport not valid long enough, or previous visa violations. You can reapply after fixing the issue. Alternatively, apply for a regular tourist visa at the Indian embassy in Lisbon.
No mandatory vaccinations for entry, but the CDC and WHO recommend hepatitis A, typhoid, and tetanus. Yellow fever vaccine is required if you're arriving from a country with yellow fever (not Portugal). Check with your doctor 4–6 weeks before travel.
