Visa on arrival
Jordan visa on arrival
You get a visa on arrival at Queen Alia International Airport and most land borders. Pay in cash — 40 JOD for single entry, 60 JOD for multiple entry. Have exact change in Jordanian dinars or USD (they give poor exchange rates).Check visa detailsRequired
Valid passport
Passport validity
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your arrival date in Jordan. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Outbound travel proof
Immigration officers routinely ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return flight or a ticket to your next destination ready. Overland departures are less strict but still carry a copy.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation
Border officers may ask where you are staying. Have a hotel confirmation or a letter from your host with their address and phone number. If you are camping or have no fixed plan, say you are staying at a specific hotel — they rarely call to verify.Recommended
Proof of funds
Financial means
Officials can ask for proof you can cover your stay. Carry at least 500 JOD in cash or have a credit card with a visible limit. Bank statements on your phone are usually accepted.Recommended
Cash only at visa-on-arrival counters
The visa fee must be paid in cash — no credit or debit cards accepted. Bring Jordanian Dinars or major foreign currency (USD, EUR). ATMs are available after immigration, but not before the visa counter.
Visa on arrival is straightforward — no advance application needed
Portuguese passport holders don't need to apply for a visa before traveling. Just show up at the airport or land border, pay the fee, and get your stamp. The whole process takes 5–10 minutes.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at the visa-on-arrival counter
At Queen Alia International Airport (AMM) in Amman, follow signs to 'Visa on Arrival' after baggage claim. At land borders like the King Hussein Bridge, the counter is just after passport control. Join the queue.
2
Pay the fee and get your stamp
Hand over your passport and the fee (cash only, usually 40 JOD). The officer will process payment, stamp your passport, and hand it back. This takes 2–5 minutes.
3
Proceed to immigration
Walk to the immigration officer with your stamped passport. They may ask for your return ticket or hotel booking — have them ready on your phone. They'll scan your passport and let you through.

Frequently asked questions

The single-entry visa on arrival costs 40 Jordanian Dinars (about 56 USD or 52 EUR). You must pay in cash — no credit cards. Some counters accept USD or EUR, but it's safer to bring JOD. Double-entry and multiple-entry visas cost more (around 60 JOD and 120 JOD respectively) and are available on request.
Yes, you can extend your visa at any police station or the Immigration Department in Amman. The extension costs 20 JOD per month, and you can extend up to 6 months total. You'll need your passport, a passport photo, and the fee. Start the process at least a week before your current visa expires.
If you're staying airside (not passing through immigration) and your layover is under 12 hours, you don't need a visa. If you want to leave the airport, you'll need a visa on arrival — same process and fee as a regular entry.
You'll be denied boarding by your airline or refused entry at the border. Jordan strictly enforces the 6-month rule. If your passport is close to expiring, renew it before you travel.
Yes, the visa on arrival is available at all major land borders, including the King Hussein Bridge (from the West Bank), the Sheikh Hussein Bridge (from Israel), and the Wadi Araba crossing (from Eilat, Israel). The same fee and process apply. Note that the King Hussein Bridge has limited hours — check before you go.
No, it's not required for entry. But it's strongly recommended — medical costs in Jordan can be high, especially for hospital stays. A basic travel insurance policy covering medical evacuation is a good idea.
Overstaying costs 1.5 JOD per day for the first 30 days, then 10 JOD per day after that. You'll pay at the airport before departure. If you overstay by more than 90 days, you may face a fine and a ban. Always extend before your visa expires.
