Portuguese passport holders can enter Lithuania without a visa for short stays. Since 2026, you can travel freely within the Schengen Area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Ensure your passport meets validity rules and carry the basics for border control.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for your entire stay in Lithuania. As a Schengen member, Lithuania follows the 90/180-day rule — you can stay 90 days within any 180-day period across all Schengen countries, not just Lithuania.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Schengen area
Immigration officers at Vilnius Airport check for a return or onward ticket before stamping you in. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight booking out of the Schengen zone ready.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Border officers may ask where you're staying. Have a hotel confirmation, Airbnb booking, or a letter from your host with their address and contact number.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during the stay
Lithuania requires visitors to show at least €40 per day of stay. A bank statement or credit card with available limit works — officers rarely ask, but have it ready.Recommended
Passport validity is strict
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your entry date. Airlines check this before boarding. If your passport expires sooner, you will be denied travel.
Schengen 90/180 rule applies
Your 90-day allowance is shared across all 27 Schengen countries. You cannot spend 90 days in Lithuania and then 90 days in France — the clock runs across the whole zone.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before departure
Check your passport is valid for 6+ months from your entry date and has at least 1 blank page. Book your return/onward ticket and first night accommodation. Save screenshots of your flight booking, hotel confirmation, and travel insurance on your phone.
2
Arrive at the airport or border crossing
At Vilnius Airport or any land border, join the queue for non-EU/non-Schengen passport holders. Have your passport ready. You'll be asked the purpose of your visit and how long you plan to stay.
3
Present your passport and answer questions
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask for your return ticket or accommodation details. Answer clearly and honestly. They may also ask about your travel insurance or funds.
4
Get your entry stamp
If everything is in order, the officer will stamp your passport with the date of entry. This stamp is your proof of legal entry. Keep your passport safe — you'll need it when leaving.
5
Collect your luggage and proceed
After passport control, collect your checked bags from the carousel and walk through customs. If you have nothing to declare, use the green channel.

Frequently asked questions

As a Portuguese passport holder, you can stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period within the Schengen Area. This includes Lithuania and all other Schengen countries. The clock resets after 180 days.
No, the 90-day visa-free stay cannot be extended for tourism or business. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for a national visa or residence permit before your 90 days expire. Contact the Migration Department in Vilnius for details.
Yes, you still need proof of onward travel. If you're driving, have your vehicle registration and insurance documents ready. For buses, a printed or digital ticket is fine.
You will likely be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry at the border. Renew your passport before traveling. Emergency passports are not accepted for visa-free travel.
Not strictly mandatory for visa-free entry, but border officers can ask for proof of insurance. More importantly, medical costs in Lithuania can be high — a hospital stay can cost hundreds of euros per day. Get insurance to avoid financial risk.
No, the 90-day visa-free stay is for tourism, business meetings, or family visits only. Remote work for a foreign employer is technically not allowed. If you plan to work remotely, consider Lithuania's digital nomad visa.
Overstaying can result in a fine, a ban from re-entering the Schengen Area for up to 3 years, and deportation. Always track your days carefully. Use the Schengen calculator app to stay within limits.
