What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Kigali International Airport
After landing, follow signs to 'Visa on Arrival' or 'Immigration'. There's a dedicated counter before the main immigration booths.
2
Fill out the visa application form
You'll get a short form at the counter. It asks for basic info: name, passport number, flight details, and where you're staying. Fill it in while queuing.
3
Pay the visa fee
Hand over $50 USD (cash) at the payment window. They'll give you a receipt. Keep it — you'll need it for the next step.
4
Get your visa sticker
Move to the visa issuance counter. Show your passport, the receipt, and your return ticket if asked. The officer will stick the visa into your passport and stamp it.
5
Proceed to passport control
Now go to the main immigration booths. Show your passport with the new visa. They'll stamp you in. Collect your bags and you're done.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, you can extend it once for up to 90 days. Visit the Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration in Kigali (KG 7 Ave, near the airport). The extension costs $50 USD and takes about 1-2 working days.
Visa on arrival is also available at major land borders like the one from Uganda (Gatuna/Katuna) and from Tanzania (Rusumo). The process is the same — fill a form, pay $50 USD cash, get the sticker. But expect fewer staff and longer waits.
No. Only cash is accepted at the visa on arrival counter. Bring $50 USD in good condition (no tears, no old notes). Euros and GBP are also accepted but at a less favourable rate.
Yes, if you're arriving from a country with yellow fever risk (including most of sub-Saharan Africa). You'll need to show the yellow card at immigration. If you're flying directly from Portugal, it's not required, but carry the card anyway — it's sometimes checked randomly.
Usually 15-30 minutes at Kigali Airport, depending on how many flights landed at the same time. During peak hours (evening arrivals from Europe), it can take up to an hour. The queue moves faster if you have exact change and your form filled out.
Yes, Rwanda offers an e-visa through the official immigration portal (https://irembo.gov.rw). It costs $50 USD and takes 2-3 working days. Some travellers prefer it to skip the queue at the airport. But the visa on arrival is just as valid and often faster.
You will be denied entry. The 6-month rule is strictly enforced. If your passport expires sooner, renew it before you travel. No exceptions at the border.
