Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to stay in Tunisia. No minimum validity beyond your departure date is required by Tunisian law, but airlines may enforce a 3-month validity rule — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Tunisia
Immigration officers at Tunis-Carthage Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight booking ready — they check this before stamping you in.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host in Tunisia. Officers rarely ask for it, but having it ready avoids delays if they do.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Keep a bank statement or credit card handy. Immigration may ask for proof of sufficient funds, though this is uncommon for short visits — 300 TND per day is a safe benchmark.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Airlines check your passport validity at check-in. If it's less than 6 months from your arrival date, you won't be allowed to board. Double-check before you go.
No visa, no fee, no forms
Tunisia is one of the easiest destinations for Portuguese passport holders. No visa application, no fee, no arrival card. Just show your passport and you're in.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare documents before flying
Check your passport validity (6+ months from arrival). Book a return ticket and first night accommodation. Print or screenshot confirmations. Get travel insurance and a local eSIM if you want data immediately.
2
Arrival at Tunis-Carthage Airport (or other entry points)
After landing, follow signs to 'Passport Control' (Passeports). Join the queue for non-Tunisian passports. Have your passport and return ticket ready. The officer will stamp your passport — no visa fee, no forms. Usually takes 1-2 minutes.
3
Baggage claim and customs
After passport control, collect your luggage. Customs is usually green channel (nothing to declare). If you're carrying more than 10,000 TND (or equivalent in foreign currency), you must declare it.
4
Exit and onward travel
Once through customs, you're free to leave. Taxis and car rentals are available outside. Keep your passport and entry stamp safe — you'll need it when leaving.

Frequently asked questions

No. Portuguese citizens can enter Tunisia visa-free for up to 90 days. This applies to tourism, business, and family visits. No application or fee is needed.
Up to 90 days per entry. The 90-day count resets if you leave and re-enter, but immigration may question frequent back-to-back visits. Overstaying can result in fines or deportation.
No. The visa-free stay is not extendable. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for a residence permit or a long-stay visa at the Tunisian embassy in Portugal before travel.
Your passport (valid 6+ months), a return or onward ticket, and sometimes proof of accommodation. Travel insurance is not mandatory but smart to have. No visa, no fee, no forms.
Not for entry, but strongly recommended. Medical costs for foreigners can be high — a hospital stay might cost hundreds of euros per day. Insurance covers that and emergency evacuation.
You will likely be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry by Tunisian immigration. Always check your passport validity before booking. Renew if needed.
Technically, no. The visa-free entry is for tourism, business meetings, and family visits. Remote work for a foreign employer is a grey area — many do it, but it's not officially allowed. If asked, say you're on holiday.
