Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must cover entire stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the full duration of your stay in Tuvalu. Airlines check this at check-in. If your passport expires within 6 months, carry a printed copy of Tuvalu's entry rules to show the airline — some carriers still ask for 6 months validity.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure
Immigration officers in Tuvalu ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket. Without one, they may deny boarding at your departure airport. Have a printed itinerary or digital copy ready.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
While not always checked, having a hotel reservation or a letter from a host in Tuvalu smooths the entry process. If you're staying with family, ask them to write a simple invitation letter with their address and phone number.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Officers may ask how you'll fund your stay. Carry a bank statement or credit card showing at least $500 USD equivalent. Cash is less common — cards work at the main hotel and bank in Funafuti.Recommended
No visa needed, but plan ahead
Tuvalu is remote — flights are limited and expensive. Book your return ticket well in advance. Also, internet and mobile coverage can be patchy outside Funafuti, so download offline maps and important documents before you go.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Funafuti International Airport
You'll land at the only international airport. After deplaning, follow signs to the immigration hall. There's usually one queue for all passengers.
2
Present your documents at immigration
Hand over your passport and return ticket. The officer may ask how long you're staying and where you're staying. Answer clearly. They'll stamp you in for up to 90 days.
3
Collect your luggage and exit
After immigration, grab your bags from the carousel (it's small). Then walk through customs — usually a quick bag check. You're in.
