Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid only for the period you plan to stay in Costa Rica. Airlines may enforce a 6-month validity rule — check with your carrier before departure.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Costa Rica
Immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket at the border. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight booking ready — they check this at the counter before stamping you in.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed or digital copy of your hotel reservation or a letter from your host. Officers rarely ask for it, but having it ready avoids delays.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Have access to at least $100 USD per day of your stay — a bank statement or credit card works. Officers rarely request it, but it's a legal requirement for entry.Recommended
180 days per entry, not per year
The 180-day visa-free period resets each time you re-enter Costa Rica. There's no annual limit, but immigration may question frequent back-to-back visits if they suspect you're living there without proper residency.
No extensions available
You cannot extend the 180-day stay. If you need to stay longer, you must leave Costa Rica before day 180 and re-enter. Overstaying leads to fines and potential re-entry bans.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare documents before you fly
Check your passport is valid for 6+ months from your arrival date. Book a return/onward flight and save the confirmation to your phone. Book your first night's accommodation and keep the email. Consider getting travel insurance and an eSIM for connectivity.
2
Arrive at any Costa Rican airport or land border
You'll go through immigration at Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) in San José, Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR) in Liberia, or at land borders like Peñas Blancas (from Nicaragua) or Paso Canoas (from Panama).
3
Present your passport and answer questions
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask: purpose of visit, length of stay, where you're staying, and proof of onward travel. Answer calmly. They rarely ask for hotel bookings or insurance, but have them ready.
4
Get your entry stamp and 180-day stay
The officer stamps your passport with the date of entry and the number of days granted (usually 180). Count from that day. Keep the stamp legible — it's your proof of legal stay.
5
Exit Costa Rica before your stay expires
You must leave Costa Rica before the 180 days run out. Overstaying can result in fines (around $100 per month) and a ban on re-entry. Extensions are not available for visa-free visitors.

Frequently asked questions

No. The visa-free entry is not extendable. You must leave before the 180 days are up. Overstaying incurs a fine of about $100 per month and can lead to a re-entry ban. If you want to stay longer, you'd need to leave Costa Rica (e.g., to Panama or Nicaragua) and re-enter, but immigration may question frequent back-to-back visits.
Not if you're arriving directly from Qatar or any country without yellow fever. However, if you've recently been in a country with yellow fever (e.g., Brazil, Colombia, parts of Africa), you'll need proof of vaccination. Check the CDC or WHO list before travel.
Technically, the visa-free entry is for tourism only. Remote work for a foreign employer is a gray area — many digital nomads do it without issues, but it's not officially permitted. Costa Rica has a separate digital nomad visa (rentista) for longer stays. For short visits, most people work remotely without problems, but don't tell immigration you're working.
You'll be fined approximately $100 per month (or part thereof) when you leave. The fine is paid at the immigration office at the airport or border. Overstays can also result in a ban from re-entering Costa Rica for a period equal to the overstay. Always leave on time.
No. Costa Rica does not require an online arrival declaration for Qatari passport holders. You just go through immigration with your passport and onward ticket. Some airlines may ask for a health pass, but that's airline-specific, not a government requirement.
Yes. Qatari passport holders can enter at any land border crossing. The same visa-free rules apply: 180 days, passport valid 6+ months, onward ticket. Popular crossings include Peñas Blancas (Nicaragua) and Paso Canoas (Panama). Expect longer queues at land borders compared to airports.
No, it's not mandatory for entry. But it's strongly recommended. Costa Rica's public healthcare is good for emergencies, but private hospitals can charge hundreds of dollars per day. A basic travel insurance policy covering medical evacuation and hospital stays is cheap peace of mind.
