Qatari passport holders need a visa to enter Spain in 2026. Spain is part of the Schengen Area, so you'll apply for a Schengen visa, which also allows travel to other Schengen countries. Plan ahead — visa processing can take several weeks.

RequirementDetailsStatus
Visa application
Schengen visa (Type C)
Apply for a Schengen visa at the Spanish consulate in Doha. You need a completed application form, valid passport, travel insurance covering €30,000, flight itinerary, and proof of accommodation. Processing takes 15 calendar days — apply at least 3 weeks before departure.Apply for Schengen visaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for the entire stay
Your passport must be valid for the full duration of your stay in Spain. Schengen rules do not require 6 months beyond departure, but airlines may enforce it — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of exit from Schengen area
Immigration officers at Madrid-Barajas and Barcelona-El Prat routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy showing you leave the Schengen zone within your visa's validity.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel confirmation, Airbnb booking, or a signed letter from your host in Spain. Border officers rarely ask, but visa officers at the consulate will check it.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statement or cash
Show a bank statement from the last 3 months or cash equivalent to €100 per day of stay. A credit card with a sufficient limit also works.Recommended
Schengen Area Rules
Spain is part of the Schengen Area. A Spanish visa lets you travel to 26 other Schengen countries (France, Germany, Italy, etc.) for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. But you must enter through Spain or spend the most days there.
Overstaying is Serious
Overstaying your visa by even a day can lead to a fine, deportation, and a ban from the entire Schengen Area for up to 5 years. Set a reminder to leave on time.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for a Schengen Visa
Book an appointment at the Spanish consulate or visa application center in Qatar (usually VFS Global or BLS International). Submit your application form, passport, photos, travel insurance, flight and hotel bookings, and bank statements. Pay the visa fee (€80 for adults, €40 for children 6–12, free under 6). Processing takes 15 calendar days on average — apply at least 4 weeks before travel.
2
Arrive at a Spanish Airport
When you land at Madrid-Barajas, Barcelona-El Prat, or any other Spanish airport, follow signs to 'Passport Control' or 'EU/EEA' vs 'All Passports'. As a non-EU national, go to the 'All Passports' queue. Have your passport and boarding pass ready. The officer may ask about your trip purpose, accommodation, and return ticket.
3
Passport Control Interview
The border officer will scan your passport and may ask a few questions: 'How long are you staying?', 'Where are you staying?', 'What's your job?'. Answer calmly and truthfully. They might check your return ticket or hotel booking. Once approved, you'll get an entry stamp — check the stamp says the correct number of days allowed.
4
Collect Luggage and Exit
After passport control, head to baggage claim. If you have nothing to declare, go through the green 'Nothing to Declare' customs channel. If you're carrying goods over €430 (€300 if arriving by air from outside the EU) or restricted items, use the red channel.

Immigration officers can ask for proof of funds. The recommended amount is around €100 per day of your stay. Bank statements, credit cards, or cash are all acceptable. Having a credit card with a reasonable limit usually satisfies them.
