Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for at least the length of your stay in Guatemala. Airlines at Doha (DOH) will check this before boarding — they want to see validity covering your full trip.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Guatemala
Immigration officers at La Aurora (GUA) routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed copy or a screenshot ready on your phone — they check this before stamping you in.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Not always requested, but having a hotel confirmation or an invitation letter from your host smooths things out if the officer asks. A simple booking printout works.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Officers may ask how you'll fund your stay. Have a bank statement or credit card ready — showing around $500 USD for a short trip is usually enough.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Airlines check your passport validity before boarding. If your passport expires within 6 months of your entry date, you will be denied boarding — no exceptions.
Overstaying is costly
Overstaying your 90-day visa-free period results in fines of about 50 quetzales per day. You may also be banned from re-entering Guatemala for up to 3 years.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Guatemala City Airport (La Aurora)
After landing, follow signs to 'Migración' (Immigration). There are separate lines for Guatemalan citizens and foreigners. Join the 'Extranjeros' line.
2
Present your documents to the officer
Hand over your passport, and if asked, your return ticket and accommodation booking. The officer will check your passport validity and stamp you in.
3
Receive your entry stamp
The officer stamps your passport with the date of entry and the number of days granted (usually 90). Check the stamp before leaving the counter.
4
Collect baggage and proceed to customs
After immigration, collect your luggage from the carousel. Then walk through the green 'Nothing to Declare' channel if you have no goods to declare, or the red channel if you do.
