Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Visa application
Apply for an Irish visa before travel
You need a visa to enter Ireland. Apply online at the Irish Immigration Service website. Processing takes 2–8 weeks — apply at least a month before your trip.Apply for visaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport must be valid for the entire time you plan to stay in Ireland. No minimum validity beyond your departure date is required, but airlines may enforce 6 months — check with your carrier.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of onward travel
Immigration officers at Dublin and Shannon airports routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready showing your departure from Ireland or the Schengen area.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel confirmation, Airbnb receipt, or a letter from your host. Officers may ask where you're staying, especially if you're a first-time visitor.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Have bank statements or a credit card ready. There's no fixed minimum, but you should be able to cover accommodation, food, and transport for your stay. €50–€100 per day is a safe benchmark.Recommended
Apply early — processing can be slow
Irish visa processing can take 15–30 working days. During summer, it may take even longer. Apply at least 6 weeks before your trip to avoid delays.
Visa-free transit?
If you are transiting through an Irish airport (e.g., Dublin) to a non-UK destination, you still need a visa unless you are a visa-exempt national. Qataris are not exempt — you need a transit visa even if you don't leave the airport.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the visa online
Go to the Irish visa website (visas.inis.gov.ie) and complete the online application form. Select 'Short Stay Visa' for tourism or business. Pay the fee online (€80 for a single-entry visa, €100 for multiple-entry).
2
Submit documents at VFS Global
After submitting online, book an appointment at the VFS Global centre in Doha. Bring your printed application, passport, photo, flight itinerary, hotel booking, bank statements (last 3 months), and travel insurance. Biometrics (fingerprints and photo) are taken on the spot.
3
Wait for processing
Processing typically takes 15 working days, but can take longer during peak season (May–August). You'll receive an email when a decision is made. Track your application online using the reference number.
4
Collect your passport
Once approved, collect your passport from the VFS centre or have it couriered to you. Check the visa sticker for correct dates and conditions.
5
Arrive in Ireland
At Dublin Airport (or Shannon/Cork), join the 'Non-EU' queue. Have your passport, visa, return ticket, and accommodation proof ready. The immigration officer may ask about your plans — answer clearly and briefly.
