Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must cover entire stay
Your passport must be valid for the full duration of your stay in Russia. Airlines check this at check-in, and immigration officers at the border enforce it strictly.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure
Immigration may ask for a confirmed return or onward ticket showing you leave Russia within 90 days. Airlines also check this before boarding.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation
Have a hotel confirmation or a formal invitation from your host ready. Border officers occasionally ask for it, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
At least 500 USD equivalent
Carry cash or a bank statement showing at least 500 USD (or equivalent in rubles) for your stay. Immigration rarely checks this, but it's safer to have it.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Russian immigration will deny entry if your passport has less than 6 months validity from your entry date. Check your passport now — if it is close, renew before booking flights.
Registration requirement for private stays
If you are staying with friends or family, your host must register you with the local migration office within 7 days. Hotels handle this automatically. Failing to register can result in fines up to 5,000 RUB.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Before you leave, gather your passport (valid 6+ months), return ticket, accommodation booking, and travel insurance. Save digital copies on your phone and print backups.
2
Arrive at a Russian airport
Most flights from Qatar land at Moscow Sheremetyevo (SVO), Domodedovo (DME), or St. Petersburg (LED). Follow signs to 'Passport Control' for foreign nationals.
3
Queue at immigration
Join the line for 'Foreign Passports'. Have your passport and boarding pass ready. The officer will check your visa-free eligibility, stamp your passport, and may ask about your trip purpose and accommodation.
4
Collect your luggage and exit
After the stamp, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. If you have nothing to declare, use the green channel. You are now free to enter Russia.
