Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Apply before travel
Romanian passport holders need an eVisa to enter Cuba. Apply at the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs portal. Processing takes 5–10 business days, so submit at least two weeks before departure.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must cover entire stay
Your passport must be valid for the full duration of your stay in Cuba. No minimum validity beyond departure is required by Cuban law, but airlines may enforce 6 months — check with your carrier.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for entry
Cuban immigration officers always ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return or onward ticket ready. Airlines also check this before boarding.Required
Proof of accommodation
Recommended to carry
Immigration may ask where you're staying. Have a hotel booking confirmation or a letter from your host (casa particular) ready. A printed copy avoids phone battery issues.Recommended
Proof of funds
Recommended to carry
Carry proof of sufficient funds for your stay — around 50 CUC per day is a safe benchmark. A recent bank statement or credit card showing available credit works. Cash is king in Cuba; cards from US banks may not work.Recommended
eVisa is digital — no embassy visit needed
You apply entirely online. No need to visit a Cuban embassy or consulate. Just fill the form, pay, and receive the approval by email. Print a copy or keep it on your phone.
Cash is king in Cuba
Credit and debit cards from foreign banks often don't work. Bring enough cash in euros or US dollars to cover your stay. Exchange at official CADECA offices — avoid street changers.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the eVisa online
Go to the official Cuban eVisa website or authorized platform. Fill in your personal details, passport info, travel dates, and accommodation. Upload a digital passport photo. Pay the fee (typically $30–50 USD, depending on processing speed). Submit and wait for approval — usually 1–3 business days. You'll receive the eVisa by email.
2
Prepare your documents
Print or save on your phone: the eVisa approval, passport (valid 6+ months), return ticket, first night hotel booking, and travel insurance. Keep them easily accessible — you'll show them at check-in and immigration.
3
Arrive at the airport in Cuba
At Havana (HAV) or other Cuban airports, join the immigration queue. Hand over your passport and eVisa. The officer may ask for your return ticket and accommodation. Answer clearly. They'll stamp your passport and let you through. No additional forms needed.
4
Get a local SIM or eSIM
After clearing customs, you can buy a local SIM at the airport or use an eSIM like Airalo that activates on landing. This avoids queues and gives you data immediately.
