Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you're in Hong Kong. No minimum validity beyond your stay is required by Hong Kong immigration, but some airlines may ask for 6 months — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Hong Kong
Immigration officers routinely ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket at the border. Have a printed or digital copy ready — they'll check it before stamping you in.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel confirmation or a letter of invitation from your host. Officers rarely ask for it, but having it ready avoids delays if they do.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient money for your stay
Have access to enough cash or credit to cover your trip — around 500 HKD per day is a safe benchmark. Officers rarely check, but they can ask.Recommended
Passport validity counts from entry date
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you arrive in Hong Kong, not from when you leave. If your passport expires sooner, renew it before your trip.
No extension available
The 90-day visa-free stay cannot be extended. If you overstay, you risk fines and a ban from re-entering Hong Kong. Plan your departure accordingly.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before departure
Check your passport validity (6+ months from entry date), print or save your return ticket, and have your accommodation booking ready. Download an eSIM or buy a local SIM so you're connected on arrival.
2
Arrive at Hong Kong International Airport (HKG)
Follow signs to 'Arrivals' and then 'Immigration'. There are separate queues for Hong Kong residents and visitors. Join the 'Visitors' queue.
3
Present your passport to the immigration officer
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask about the purpose of your visit, how long you're staying, and where you're staying. Answer clearly and briefly. They may also ask to see your return ticket.
4
Receive your entry stamp and collect luggage
The officer will stamp your passport with the date of entry and the allowed stay period (usually 90 days). After that, proceed to baggage claim and then customs.
