Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the entire stay in Iceland
Your Romanian passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to be in Iceland. Since Iceland is in the Schengen zone, the 90/180-day rule applies across all Schengen countries — not per country. Airlines check this at check-in.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Schengen area
Immigration officers at Keflavík Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you'll leave the Schengen zone within 90 days. Have a printed or digital copy ready — they check this at passport control.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Officers sometimes ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary. A hotel confirmation or a letter from your host covers this. I've been asked twice at Keflavík — better to have it ready.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during the stay
Border guards may ask how you'll fund your trip. A bank statement or credit card showing access to around 10,000 ISK per day (roughly €70) usually satisfies them. I've never been asked, but a friend was once turned away for not having proof.Recommended
Schengen 90/180-day rule applies
Your 90-day visa-free stay covers all 27 Schengen countries combined. If you've already spent time in France, Germany, or any other Schengen state, that time counts toward your 90 days in Iceland. Use the Schengen calculator to track your days.
Keep your entry stamp safe
The passport control officer at Keflavík will stamp your passport with the entry date. This stamp is your proof of legal entry. If you lose it, you may have trouble proving you didn't overstay.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Keflavík Airport
Most flights land at Keflavík International Airport (KEF). Follow signs to 'Passport Control' — it's a single queue for all non-Schengen arrivals.
2
Present your passport
Hand over your passport. The officer will check your photo, validity, and may ask about your trip purpose and length of stay.
3
Answer questions (if asked)
Common questions: 'How long are you staying?', 'Where are you staying?', 'Do you have a return ticket?'. Answer clearly and briefly.
4
Get your entry stamp
The officer stamps your passport with the entry date. This stamp marks the start of your 90-day Schengen stay. Keep it safe.
5
Collect luggage and exit
After passport control, head to baggage claim, then through customs (green channel if nothing to declare).

Up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This is the standard Schengen rule. If you've already spent time in other Schengen countries, that counts toward your 90 days.
No. The visa-free stay cannot be extended for tourism. If you need to stay longer (e.g., for work or study), you must apply for a relevant permit before travelling.
You may be denied boarding by the airline or entry by Icelandic immigration. Always renew your passport before travelling if it has less than 6 months validity remaining.
Yes, it's a good idea to have one. Immigration may ask to see proof that you'll leave the Schengen area within 90 days. A screenshot on your phone is fine.
Not for entry, but it's strongly recommended. Medical costs in Iceland are very high — a simple hospital visit can cost hundreds of euros. Insurance covering at least €30,000 is wise.
Overstaying is a violation of Schengen rules. You could face a fine, deportation, and a ban from re-entering the Schengen area for up to 5 years. Always track your days carefully.
