Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid only for the period you plan to stay in Mongolia — there is no 6-month validity rule. Airlines may still enforce their own 6-month policy, so check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Mongolia
Immigration officers at Chinggis Khaan International Airport routinely ask for a confirmed onward or return ticket. Have a printed copy or a screenshot ready on your phone showing your flight out of Mongolia within the 30-day visa-free period.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
You may be asked to show where you're staying for the first few nights. A printed hotel confirmation or a letter from your host with their address and phone number works fine.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient money for your stay
Officers can request evidence you can support yourself — roughly $50–$100 USD per day. A recent bank statement or a credit card with a decent limit usually satisfies them.Recommended
Visa-free entry is for tourism and business visits only
You cannot work or study under the visa-free regime. If you plan to work, study, or volunteer, you need a proper visa from a Mongolian embassy before you travel.
Check your passport expiry before booking flights
Airlines check passport validity at check-in. If your passport has less than 6 months left, they may refuse to let you board — even if you're only staying a week. Renew first.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at the airport or land border
You'll enter Mongolia through Chinggis Khaan International Airport (Ulaanbaatar) or one of the land borders (e.g., Altanbulag from Russia, Zamiin-Uud from China). At the airport, follow signs to 'Foreign Passports' — the queue is usually short.
2
Present your documents to the immigration officer
Hand over your passport and boarding pass (if flying). The officer will check your passport validity, blank page, and may ask for your return ticket and accommodation. Answer clearly — they speak basic English or use a translator app.
3
Get your entry stamp
The officer stamps your passport with the date of entry and the allowed stay (30 days). Check the stamp before walking away — make sure the dates are correct. You're now free to enter Mongolia.
4
Collect your luggage and exit
After immigration, proceed to baggage claim (if you checked bags), then customs. There's usually nothing to declare for personal items. Exit into the arrivals hall.

Mongolia uses the Tögrög (MNT). ATMs are common in Ulaanbaatar but scarce in rural areas. Bring some cash in USD or EUR to exchange at banks or exchange offices — rates are fair.
No, it's not required by law. But if you need medical evacuation from the Gobi Desert or a hospital in Ulaanbaatar, costs can run into thousands of dollars. Get insurance.
