Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Apply online before travel
Apply for a Russian eVisa at the official portal at least 4 days before your trip. The eVisa covers tourism, business, and humanitarian visits — single entry, up to 16 days. Processing takes up to 4 calendar days, and you print the approval to show at the border.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for the entire stay
Your Romanian passport must be valid for the full duration of your stay in Russia. No minimum validity beyond departure is required by Russian law, but airlines may enforce 6 months — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Russia
Immigration officers routinely ask for a confirmed return or onward ticket showing you leave Russia before your eVisa expires. Have a printed or digital copy ready — they check this at passport control in Moscow and St Petersburg.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Carry a printed hotel reservation or a Russian invitation letter (if staying with friends/family). Border officers rarely ask, but having it ready avoids delays — especially if you arrive at a less common airport.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can cover your stay
Have at least 500 EUR (or equivalent in RUB) available per day of your stay. Officers rarely check this for eVisa holders, but cash or a bank statement gives you a safety net if questioned.Recommended
eVisa processing time
Processing can take up to 4 calendar days, but apply at least a week before your trip to avoid delays. Don't book non-refundable flights until you have the eVisa in hand.
Keep your migration card
When you enter Russia, you'll receive a migration card (a small paper slip). Keep it with your passport at all times — you'll need to hand it back when you leave. Losing it can cause delays.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the eVisa online
Go to evisa.kdmid.ru, fill in the application, upload a passport photo and a scan of your passport bio page. Pay the fee (if any) and submit. Processing takes up to 4 calendar days. You'll receive the eVisa by email.
2
Pack your documents
Print or save on your phone: eVisa approval email, passport, return ticket, first night hotel booking, and travel insurance. Keep them together in a folder.
3
Arrive at a Russian airport
At passport control, hand over your passport and eVisa printout (or show the email). The officer may ask for your return ticket and hotel booking. Answer clearly. You'll get a stamped migration card — keep it safe until you leave.
4
Register your stay
Within 7 days of arrival, your hotel or host must register you with the local migration authorities. If staying in a private apartment, you may need to do this yourself at the nearest MVD office. Keep the registration slip.
