Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended departure date from Senegal. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Senegal
Immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket at Dakar Blaise Diagne Airport. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight booking ready — they check this before stamping you in.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a printed hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host in Senegal. Immigration may ask for it if you look like you're staying with friends or family.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Have a bank statement or credit card showing at least 500,000 XOF (~€760) available. Officers rarely ask for it, but if you're flagged as a potential overstayer, they will.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Senegal requires your passport to be valid for at least 6 months from your arrival date. Airlines check this before boarding. If your passport expires sooner, you will be denied travel. Renew your passport well in advance.
No visa required, but keep documents handy
You don't need a visa, but immigration may ask for your return ticket and accommodation details. Have them saved on your phone or printed. It makes the process smoother.

What happens at the border

1
Arrival at Dakar Blaise Diagne International Airport (DSS)
After landing, follow signs to 'Immigration' or 'Passport Control'. There are separate queues for foreigners and Senegalese citizens. Join the foreigner queue. Have your passport and return/onward ticket ready. The officer will stamp your passport and may ask a few questions (purpose of visit, where you're staying). The process usually takes 5-15 minutes.
2
Collect your luggage and proceed to customs
After immigration, go to baggage claim. Customs is usually straightforward for tourists. You may be asked to open bags if you have large amounts of goods. Then exit into the arrivals hall.
3
Arrange transport to your accommodation
Taxis are available outside the terminal. Agree on the fare before getting in (around 10,000-15,000 XOF to central Dakar). Uber and Bolt also operate in Dakar. Have your accommodation address ready.
