Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Serbian passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to stay in Bulgaria. Bulgaria is part of the Schengen zone for visa-free travel, so the 90-day limit applies across all Schengen countries combined, not just Bulgaria.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Bulgaria
Immigration officers at Bulgarian airports and land borders routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight, bus, or train booking leaving Bulgaria or the Schengen area within 90 days.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Border officers may ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive by land. Have a hotel confirmation, Airbnb booking, or a letter from a friend with their address ready to show.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Bulgarian immigration can ask for proof you have enough money for your stay. Carry a bank statement or credit card showing access to at least €50 per day of your trip.Recommended
Overstay penalties are serious
Overstaying even a day can result in a fine of up to 500 BGN (around €250) and a ban from Bulgaria and the Schengen area for up to 5 years. Set a reminder to leave before day 90.
No visa needed, but be prepared
While entry is straightforward, immigration officers can still ask for proof of return ticket, accommodation, or funds. Have digital copies ready on your phone to avoid delays.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Bulgarian border control
At Sofia Airport or any land border, join the 'All Passports' queue. Have your passport and boarding pass ready. The officer will check your passport validity, stamp it, and ask about your stay purpose and length. Answer briefly and honestly.
2
Present supporting documents if asked
The officer may request your return ticket, accommodation booking, or proof of funds. Have them accessible on your phone or printed. This is rare for Serbian passport holders but can happen.
3
Receive entry stamp and proceed
Once approved, you'll get an entry stamp with the date. The officer will not write your allowed stay — it's automatically 90 days. Keep the stamp visible in case you need to show it later.
