Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to be in Peru. Immigration officers rarely check for 6 months beyond departure, but airlines sometimes do — if your passport expires within 6 months, carry proof of your return flight just in case.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Peru
Immigration at Jorge Chávez Airport regularly asks for a return or onward ticket before they stamp you in. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight out of Peru ready — they won't let you through without it.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Not always checked, but some officers ask where you're staying. Have your first night's hotel confirmation or a letter from your host handy — a screenshot on your phone works fine.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Immigration can ask for evidence of sufficient funds — roughly $1,000 USD for a 90-day stay. A bank statement or credit card with a decent limit usually satisfies them.Recommended
Passport validity is strict
Peruvian immigration enforces the 6-month passport validity rule strictly. If your passport expires sooner, you will be denied entry — no exceptions. Renew before you go.
Keep a digital copy of everything
Save photos of your passport, return ticket, and accommodation confirmation on your phone. Also email them to yourself. If you lose your documents, this makes replacement much easier.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Peruvian immigration
At Lima's Jorge Chávez International Airport or any other entry point, join the 'Foreign Passports' queue. Have your passport, return ticket (screenshot), and accommodation booking ready.
2
Present documents and get stamped
Hand over your passport. The officer will check your passport validity, stamp it, and usually ask your purpose of visit. Answer clearly: tourism, business, or transit. You'll receive a 90-day stay stamp.
3
Collect luggage and exit
After immigration, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. You're free to enter Peru. Keep your passport handy for any spot checks.
