Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the entire stay
Your passport must be valid for the entire period you plan to stay in Russia. No minimum validity beyond your departure date is required by Russian immigration, but some airlines may enforce a 6-month rule — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Recommended for visa-free entry
Immigration officers at Russian airports may ask for proof of onward travel. Have a printed or digital copy of your return or onward ticket ready — a flight reservation works if you haven't booked yet.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Recommended for visa-free entry
Carry a hotel booking confirmation or an invitation letter from your host. Russian border officers sometimes ask for your accommodation address during entry questioning.Recommended
Proof of funds
Recommended for visa-free entry
Have evidence of sufficient funds for your stay — a bank statement or credit card showing at least 500 EUR equivalent is a safe benchmark. Officers rarely check this for short visits, but it helps if questioned.Recommended
Keep your migration card safe
The small paper slip you get at entry is your proof of legal stay. Lose it and you'll face fines and delays when leaving. Staple it inside your passport or keep it in a secure pocket.
No visa needed — but don't overstay
The 30-day visa-free period is strict. Overstaying even by a day can result in a fine of 2,000-5,000 RUB and a ban from re-entering Russia for up to 5 years. Set a reminder to leave on time.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare documents before departure
Check your passport validity (6+ months from entry date). Book your return/onward ticket. Save a digital copy of your accommodation booking. Consider getting travel insurance and a local eSIM.
2
Arrive at Russian border control
At any international airport (Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo, Pulkovo, etc.), join the 'Foreign Passports' queue. Have your passport and boarding pass ready. The officer will stamp your entry with a migration card — keep the smaller slip with your passport until you leave.
3
Present documents if asked
The officer may ask for your return ticket and accommodation address. Answer clearly. If you have insurance, mention it only if asked. The process usually takes 1-2 minutes per person.
4
Receive entry stamp and migration card
You'll get an entry stamp and a migration card (small paper slip). Keep the migration card with your passport at all times — you'll need to hand it back when leaving Russia. Losing it means a fine and delays.
