Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid only for the period you plan to stay in Panama. Airlines sometimes enforce a 6-month validity rule — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Panama
Immigration officers routinely ask for a confirmed onward ticket within 90 days. Airlines at check-in will also verify this — have a printed or digital copy ready.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Not always requested, but having a hotel confirmation or an invitation letter from your host speeds up the immigration interview. Keep a copy on your phone.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Officers may ask for bank statements or cash to confirm you have at least $500 USD for your trip. A credit card statement works too.Recommended
No visa needed — but don't skip the onward ticket
Panama immigration rarely asks for proof of funds or hotel bookings, but they almost always ask for an onward ticket. Have a screenshot of your flight out of Panama ready on your phone.
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day you enter Panama. Airlines check this before boarding. If your passport expires sooner, you'll be denied boarding — no exceptions.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Tocumen International Airport (PTY)
After landing, follow signs to 'Migración' (Immigration). There are two lines: one for Panamanians/residents, one for foreigners. Join the foreigners queue.
2
Present your documents to the officer
Hand over your passport and any supporting documents (onward ticket, hotel booking). The officer will ask a few questions (purpose of visit, length of stay). Answer clearly.
3
Get your entry stamp
The officer stamps your passport with a 90-day tourist permit. Check the stamp says '90' before stepping away. If it says fewer days, ask politely for correction.
4
Proceed to baggage claim and customs
After immigration, collect your luggage. Customs may ask to scan bags. Declare any items over $500 or restricted goods.

Frequently asked questions

No, the 90-day tourist permit is not extendable. You must leave Panama before the stamp expires. Overstaying results in fines (around $50–$100) and possible entry bans.
You cannot extend a tourist visa. You would need to leave Panama (e.g., to Costa Rica or Colombia) for at least 72 hours and then re-enter to get a new 90-day stamp. Immigration may question frequent back-to-back visits.
Not required for Russian passport holders arriving directly from Russia. However, if you have recently visited a country with yellow fever (e.g., Brazil, Colombia), you may need proof of vaccination. Check with your airline.
Technically, the tourist permit does not allow paid work for a Panamanian employer. Remote work for a foreign company is a grey area — many digital nomads do it, but it's not officially permitted. Panama has a separate 'Short Stay Visa' for remote workers (up to 9 months) if you want to be fully legal.
You'll be fined approximately $50–$100 at immigration when you leave. The fine depends on how long you overstayed. Overstays over 6 months can result in a ban from re-entering Panama for up to 3 years.
No, there is no electronic travel authorization or arrival declaration for Russian passport holders. Just show up with your passport and onward ticket.
Yes, you can enter by land from Costa Rica (at Paso Canoas or Sixaola crossings) or by sea from Colombia. The same 90-day visa-free rule applies. Have your passport and onward ticket ready.
