Valid passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended stay
Your passport must have at least 6 months of validity remaining from your date of entry into Rwanda. Carry a photocopy of the bio-data page separately in case the original is needed for registration.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of onward travel
Immigration officers at Kigali Airport routinely ask for proof of a return or onward flight. Have a printed or digital copy of your ticket ready — they check this before issuing the visa on arrival.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Have a printed hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host in Rwanda. The immigration officer may ask for this when you apply for the visa on arrival.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient funds for your stay
Carry at least $200 USD in cash or have a credit card with available balance. Officers rarely ask, but having it ready avoids delays.Recommended
Yellow fever vaccine required if transiting through endemic countries
If your flight to Rwanda has a layover in Ethiopia, Kenya, or any country with yellow fever risk, you must show a yellow fever vaccination certificate (WHO card). Without it, you may be denied entry or forced to get vaccinated at the airport.
Visa on arrival is straightforward — but have cash as backup
Kigali Airport accepts cards, but card machines can go down. Carry USD 50–70 in cash (small bills) to avoid any hiccup. Land borders are cash-only.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. All official land border crossings (e.g., from Uganda at Gatuna, from Tanzania at Rusumo) issue visas on arrival under the same conditions. The fee is the same USD 50.
The standard visa on arrival is valid for 30 days from the date of issue. You can extend it once at the Rwanda Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration in Kigali for an additional 30 days (fee about USD 50).
USD is preferred. At Kigali Airport, credit/debit cards are accepted. At land borders, cash in USD is more reliable. Avoid paying in euros or pounds — you'll get a poor rate.
Yes, if you're arriving from a country with yellow fever risk. Russian passport holders transiting through Ethiopia, Kenya, or other endemic areas may be asked for the yellow fever certificate. Get the vaccine and carry the WHO card.
You can apply for a 30-day extension at the immigration office in Kigali (KG 7 Ave, near the airport). The fee is about USD 50. Do this before your initial visa expires.
Yes, Rwanda offers an e-visa (https://irembo.gov.rw). It costs the same USD 50 and is processed in 3–5 business days. Some travellers prefer it to skip the queue at the airport. You still need the same documents.
Immigration may deny your visa on arrival. Airlines also check this before boarding. If you're overlanding out, show a bus ticket or a written itinerary. A refundable onward flight booked and cancelled later is a common workaround.
