Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Visa application
Apply for a visa at the Ukrainian embassy or consulate
Russian citizens need a visa to enter Ukraine. Apply at the nearest Ukrainian embassy or consulate — there is no eVisa option for Russian passport holders. Processing takes 5–10 working days, and you must submit your passport in person.Check visa requirementsRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for the entire stay
Your passport must be valid for the full duration of your stay in Ukraine. There is no 6-month validity rule — just cover your travel dates. Airlines may still ask for 6 months, so check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Ukraine
Border officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket at land crossings and airports. Have a printed or digital copy ready showing your exit from Ukraine within your visa's validity period.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Immigration may ask where you're staying. Have a hotel confirmation or a notarized invitation letter from a Ukrainian host. Airbnb bookings are accepted but less common at land borders.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Officers can ask for proof of sufficient funds — roughly $50 per day of stay. A bank statement or credit card with available limit works. Cash is less common but accepted at land crossings.Recommended
No visa-free access for Russian passport holders
As of 2026, Russian citizens cannot enter Ukraine without a visa. The eVisa is the only option. Do not attempt to enter without one — you will be refused entry and may face a re-entry ban.
Register within 3 days if staying longer
If you plan to stay more than 3 days, make sure your accommodation registers you with the State Migration Service. If you're in a private rental, you must do it yourself. Keep the registration slip — you may need it when leaving.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for eVisa online
Go to the official Ukraine eVisa portal (evisa.gov.ua). Fill in the application form, upload a digital passport photo and a scan of your passport bio page. Pay the visa fee (around $20-30 USD depending on processing speed). Submit and wait for approval — typically 5-10 business days, but can take longer.
2
Prepare your documents
Once your visa is approved, print the eVisa approval letter. Also print or save to your phone: your passport, return ticket, accommodation booking, and travel insurance certificate. Keep them all together in a folder.
3
Arrive at the border
At any Ukrainian airport or land border crossing, present your passport and eVisa approval to the immigration officer. They may ask for your return ticket and accommodation. Answer questions clearly. The officer will stamp your passport with an entry stamp.
4
Register with local authorities
If you stay longer than 3 days in Ukraine, your hotel or host must register you with the State Migration Service. If you're in a private apartment, you need to do this yourself within 3 working days. Keep the registration slip — you may need it when leaving.
