Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Visa application
Apply at China Visa Application Service Center
Rwandan passport holders need a visa before traveling to China. Submit your application at the China Visa Application Service Center (CVASC) — the official portal is visaforchina.cn. Processing takes 4–7 business days for standard applications; expedited service costs extra.Apply for visaRequired
Valid passport
Must have at least 6 months validity beyond your intended stay
Your passport needs at least 6 months of remaining validity from your departure date from China. Airlines check this at check-in — if your passport expires sooner, you will be denied boarding.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for visa issuance and entry
You need a confirmed return or onward ticket to leave China. The visa application asks for flight details, and immigration officers at major airports like Beijing Capital and Shanghai Pudong routinely check for onward travel proof.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Have a hotel reservation or an invitation letter from your host in China ready. Immigration may ask for your accommodation details during entry questioning — a printed booking confirmation works best.Recommended
Proof of funds
Bank statements or cash
Carry bank statements or enough cash to cover your stay — immigration officers can ask for proof of financial means. A daily budget of around $100 USD is a safe benchmark.Recommended
Apply well in advance
Chinese visa processing can take up to 2 weeks, and you cannot get one at the border. Start your application at least 3 weeks before your departure date.
Keep your entry stamp safe
You'll receive an entry stamp in your passport when you arrive. Don't lose it — you'll need it when you leave China.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Gather your passport (valid 6+ months), a recent passport photo, your flight itinerary, and accommodation booking. If you have an invitation letter from a Chinese host, include that too.
2
Submit your visa application
Go to the Chinese Visa Application Service Centre in Kigali (or apply through the embassy if required). Fill out the online form, pay the fee (around 60–100 USD depending on visa type), and submit your documents. Processing takes 4–7 working days typically.
3
Collect your passport with visa
Once approved, your passport will have a visa sticker. Check the validity dates and number of entries allowed. If you applied by mail, you'll receive it back.
4
Arrive in China and go through immigration
At the airport, join the 'Foreigners' queue. Hand over your passport with visa, and be ready to show your return ticket and accommodation booking if asked. You'll get an entry stamp — keep it safe.
