Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
eVisa application
Hong Kong Visit Visa (eVisa)
Apply online at the Hong Kong Immigration Department's website. The eVisa is required for Rwandan passport holders — there is no visa on arrival or visa-free entry. Processing takes 4–6 weeks, so apply well before your travel date.Apply for eVisaRequired
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of stay
Your passport needs to be valid for at least the full length of your stay in Hong Kong. Airlines may enforce a 6-month validity rule — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of onward travel
Immigration officers routinely ask for a confirmed return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready — they check this at the counter before issuing entry.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or invitation letter
Carry a printed hotel reservation or a letter of invitation from your host in Hong Kong. Officers rarely ask, but having it ready avoids delays.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient financial means
Have bank statements or a credit card showing you can support yourself during the stay. There's no fixed minimum, but around HK$1,000 per day is a safe benchmark.Recommended
Apply early — processing times vary
eVisa processing can take up to 2 weeks during busy periods. Don't wait until the last minute. Apply at least 3 weeks before your departure.
Keep digital and paper copies
Save your eVisa PDF on your phone and print a paper copy. Immigration officers may ask to see it at the counter. A screenshot won't always work if the file is large.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the eVisa online
Go to the Hong Kong Immigration Department's eVisa portal. Fill in your personal details, passport info, and travel dates. Upload a scanned copy of your passport bio page and a recent passport photo. Pay the fee (around HKD 230) by credit card. Submit and wait for approval — typically 3-5 business days.
2
Receive and save your eVisa
You'll get an email with your eVisa PDF. Print a paper copy and also save it on your phone. The eVisa is linked to your passport number — double-check all details match.
3
Prepare your documents for arrival
Before you fly, gather: passport (6+ months validity), eVisa printout, return ticket, and first night accommodation confirmation. Keep them in your carry-on.
4
Arrive at Hong Kong International Airport (HKG)
After landing, follow signs to 'Arrivals' and then 'Immigration'. Join the 'Foreign Passports' queue. Hand over your passport and eVisa. The officer may ask about your stay duration, accommodation, and return plans. Answer clearly. You'll get an entry stamp valid for up to 30 days.
