Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to stay in Senegal. Immigration officers at Dakar Blaise Diagne Airport check this at the counter — they won't let you through if your passport expires before you leave.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Senegal
Airlines check for a return or onward ticket at check-in, and immigration officers occasionally ask for it at the border. Have a printed or digital copy of your outbound flight ready — a bus ticket to a neighboring country also works.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Immigration rarely asks for this, but airline staff sometimes request it at check-in. A simple hotel confirmation email or a letter from a friend in Senegal is enough.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Not routinely checked, but carry a credit card or a few hundred euros in cash just in case. Immigration has the right to ask, and having nothing visible can slow you down.Recommended
No visa needed — but don't skip the checklist
Senegal is visa-free for Rwandans, but immigration still checks passport validity, return tickets, and occasionally accommodation. Having these ready makes entry smooth.
Overstaying is costly
You cannot extend the 90-day visa-free stay. Overstaying, even by a day, can result in fines (around 10,000–50,000 XOF) and a possible entry ban. Set a reminder to leave on time.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Blaise Diagne International Airport (DSS)
After landing, follow signs to 'Immigration' or 'Passport Control'. Join the queue for foreign passports. Have your passport and return ticket ready. The officer will stamp your passport — no fee, no form. You'll get 90 days.
2
Collect your luggage and proceed to customs
After immigration, head to baggage claim. Customs is usually straightforward — green channel for nothing to declare. If you're carrying more than 10,000 EUR (or equivalent), you must declare it.
3
Exit the airport
Once through customs, you're free to exit. Taxis and ride-hailing apps (like Yango) are available outside. Have your accommodation address ready for the driver.

Frequently asked questions

No. The visa-free entry is strictly 90 days and cannot be extended. If you want to stay longer, you must leave Senegal and re-enter, or apply for a longer-term visa at a Senegalese embassy before your trip. Overstaying can result in fines of 10,000–50,000 XOF and a possible entry ban.
Yes, if you're arriving from a country with yellow fever risk (Rwanda is not on the list, but if you've recently traveled to an endemic area, you'll need proof). Otherwise, it's not required for direct travel from Rwanda. Check with your doctor before departure.
You will likely be denied boarding by the airline or refused entry at immigration. Renew your passport before traveling. The 6-month rule is strictly enforced.
No. The 90-day visa-free stay is for tourism, business meetings, or short visits. Any paid work requires a work visa or permit. If you're caught working without authorization, you risk deportation and a ban.
No. There is no online arrival declaration for Senegal. You simply show your passport at immigration and get stamped. No forms needed.
The local currency is the West African CFA franc (XOF). Euros and US dollars are widely accepted at exchange bureaus and hotels, but you'll get better rates using ATMs. Credit cards are accepted in major hotels and restaurants in Dakar, but cash is king elsewhere.
Senegal is generally safe for tourists, but like anywhere, be aware of your surroundings. Petty theft (pickpocketing, bag snatching) can happen in crowded areas. Avoid walking alone at night in unfamiliar areas. Check your government's travel advisory for the latest updates.
