Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus

Apply before travel

Valid passport
Must be valid for entire stay
Your passport must be valid for the full duration of your stay in Somalia. No minimum validity beyond departure is required by Somali law, but airlines may enforce 6 months — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Required for entry
Immigration at Mogadishu airport asks for a confirmed onward or return ticket. Have a printed copy or a screenshot ready on your phone. Airlines also check this before boarding.Required
Proof of accommodation
Recommended to carry
Hotel booking confirmation or a letter of invitation from your host in Somalia. Immigration may ask where you are staying — having a printed booking avoids delays.Recommended
Proof of funds
Recommended to carry
Carry enough cash (USD is widely accepted) or a bank statement showing you can cover your stay. Somalia is largely cash-based — ATMs are scarce outside Mogadishu.Recommended
Security situation
Somalia has active conflict zones and a high risk of terrorism. Check your government's travel advisory before booking. If you go, register with your embassy and have a local contact.
eVisa is mandatory
There is no visa on arrival for Rwandans. Do not travel without an approved eVisa — you will be refused entry and sent back.

What happens at the border

1
Apply for the eVisa online
Go to the official Somali eVisa portal (https://evisa.gov.so). Fill in the application form, upload your passport photo and passport scan, and pay the fee. Processing usually takes 3-5 business days.
2
Receive and print your eVisa
Once approved, you'll get an email with the eVisa PDF. Print a copy and also save it on your phone. You'll need to show it at check-in and on arrival.
3
Prepare your documents for departure
Before heading to the airport, gather: passport (6+ months validity), printed eVisa, return/onward ticket, and accommodation booking. Keep them in your carry-on.
4
Arrive at Mogadishu or Hargeisa airport
Most flights arrive at Aden Adde International Airport (MGQ) in Mogadishu or Egal International Airport (HGA) in Hargeisa. Go to the immigration counter, present your passport and eVisa. You'll be stamped in. The process is straightforward but can be slow — expect 20-40 minutes.
