Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your passport needs to be valid for your entire stay in Bulgaria. Since Bulgaria is in the Schengen area for visa-free travel, border officers may also check that you have not exceeded 90 days in any 180-day period across all Schengen countries.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Bulgaria
Immigration officers at Sofia Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket. Have a printed or digital copy ready showing your departure from Bulgaria or the Schengen zone within your visa-free stay.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel confirmation, Airbnb receipt, or a letter from your host. Border officers sometimes ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Have a bank statement or credit card ready. Officers may ask to see you have enough money for your stay — around 50 EUR per day is a safe benchmark.Recommended
Bulgaria is in the EU but not in Schengen
Your 90-day visa-free stay in Bulgaria is separate from the Schengen 90/180 rule. However, Bulgaria is expected to join Schengen soon — check current status before planning long trips.
Overstaying can get you banned
Overstaying even by a day can result in a fine (around 500 BGN) and a temporary ban from entering Bulgaria or other EU countries. Set a calendar reminder to leave on time.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Bulgarian border
At Sofia Airport or any land border, join the 'All Passports' queue. Have your passport and return ticket ready. The officer will check your passport, stamp it, and wave you through. Expect a short queue, usually 5–15 minutes.
2
Present documents if asked
If the officer asks, show your return ticket and accommodation booking. They rarely ask for proof of funds for Swedish passport holders, but have a bank statement or credit card handy just in case.
3
Receive entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the entry date. Check the stamp is legible before walking away. That stamp determines your 90-day allowance.
