Swedish passport holders can enter Costa Rica without a visa for tourism or business stays up to 180 days. This policy has been in place since 2026, making it one of the most generous entry allowances in Central America. Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months from your arrival date.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Swedish passport needs to be valid for the entire time you plan to stay in Costa Rica. No minimum validity beyond your departure date is required by Costa Rican law, but airlines may enforce a 6-month rule — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Costa Rica
Immigration officers routinely ask for a return or onward ticket at the border. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight booking out of Costa Rica ready — a bus ticket to Panama also works if you're leaving overland.Recommended
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Officers may ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary. A hotel confirmation or a letter from a host with their address and phone number covers this.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during your stay
Costa Rica can ask for evidence of sufficient funds — roughly $100 USD per day of your stay is a safe benchmark. A recent bank statement or a credit card with a decent limit usually satisfies the officer.Recommended
Passport validity counts from arrival, not departure
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after the day you land in Costa Rica. If it expires sooner, you'll be turned away at the airport.
Overstaying is costly
The 180-day stay is not extendable. Overstaying even a day can result in fines of $100–$200 and a possible re-entry ban. Set a reminder to leave on time.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare documents before departure
Print or save digital copies of your passport, return ticket, accommodation booking, and travel insurance. Keep them in a separate folder on your phone for quick access.
2
Arrive at San José (SJO) or Liberia (LIR) airport
You'll go through immigration at the airport. Join the 'Extranjeros' (Foreigners) queue. Have your passport and return ticket ready. The officer will stamp your passport for up to 180 days.
3
Show your documents at immigration counter
Hand over your passport. The officer may ask for your return ticket and accommodation address. Answer clearly and briefly. The process usually takes 2-5 minutes.
4
Collect your luggage and exit
After immigration, proceed to baggage claim, then customs. You're free to enter Costa Rica.

Technically, the visa-free entry is for tourism or business meetings, not for remote work. However, many digital nomads do it without issues. For official remote work, consider Costa Rica's digital nomad visa (up to 1 year).
Contact the Swedish embassy in San José immediately. They can issue an emergency passport. You'll also need a police report. Keep a photocopy of your passport separately.
No, there is no entry fee for Swedish passport holders. The visa-free entry is free. Just show your documents at immigration.
