Swedish passport holders don't need a visa for short trips to Spain. From 2026, you can travel freely in the Schengen Area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Your passport must be valid at least 6 months from your entry date.

Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Swedish passport needs to be valid for your entire stay in Spain. Spain does not require 6 months of validity beyond your departure date, but airlines may still enforce this — check with your carrier before flying.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from the Schengen zone
Immigration officers at Spanish airports routinely ask for a return or onward ticket showing you'll leave the Schengen area within 90 days. Have a printed or digital copy ready — budget airlines sometimes check this at check-in too.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Officers may ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary. A hotel confirmation or a letter from a host with their address and contact number works fine.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself during the stay
Spain can ask for proof of sufficient funds — roughly €100 per day of your stay, or a bank statement showing you have at least €1,000 for a short trip. A credit card and recent bank statement cover this.Recommended
90-day limit applies to all Schengen countries
Your 90 days in Spain count toward the same 90-day limit for the entire Schengen Area. If you've already spent time in France, Italy, or Germany this year, those days reduce your allowance for Spain.
No visa needed, but entry is not guaranteed
Even without a visa, immigration officers can deny entry if they suspect you'll overstay, work illegally, or can't support yourself. Always carry proof of your return ticket, accommodation, and sufficient funds.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents before departure
Check your passport validity (6+ months from entry date). Book your return/onward ticket and first night accommodation. Save screenshots of both on your phone. If you want insurance or an eSIM, arrange those now.
2
Arrive at the airport in Sweden
Check in for your flight. You'll need your passport. The airline may ask to see your return ticket or accommodation confirmation, especially if you're flying on a one-way ticket.
3
Go through passport control in Spain
At Spanish airports (Madrid-Barajas, Barcelona-El Prat, etc.), join the 'Non-EU' queue. Hand over your passport. The officer may ask: 'How long are you staying?', 'Where are you staying?', 'Do you have a return ticket?'. Answer clearly and briefly. They rarely ask for proof, but have it ready.
4
Collect your luggage and exit
After passport control, pick up your bags from the carousel and walk through customs (green channel if you have nothing to declare). That's it — you're in Spain.

Frequently asked questions

Up to 90 days within any 180-day period. This applies to the entire Schengen Area, so days spent in France, Germany, etc. also count. Use the Schengen calculator on the EU website to track your days.
No, not as a tourist. The 90-day limit is strict and cannot be extended for tourism. If you need to stay longer, you'd need a different visa type (e.g., work, study, or long-stay visa) applied for before travel.
Yes, you need a ticket out of the Schengen Area entirely. A flight from Spain to Sweden doesn't count — you need proof you'll leave the Schengen zone before your 90 days are up.
You risk being denied boarding by the airline or entry by Spanish immigration. Renew your passport before you travel. Some countries accept 3 months validity, but Spain follows the 6-month rule strictly.
It's not routinely asked, but immigration officers can request it. Have a bank statement or credit card ready. A reasonable amount is around €100 per day of your stay.
No, the tourist visa does not permit any work, including remote work for a foreign employer. Spain has a separate digital nomad visa for that. Working remotely on a tourist visa is technically illegal and could lead to entry bans.
You may be fined, banned from re-entering the Schengen Area for up to 3 years, or both. Overstaying is taken seriously. If you're close to the limit, leave before day 90.
