Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Swedish passport needs to be valid for the entire time you're in Hong Kong. No 6-month validity rule applies here — just cover your stay dates. Airlines sometimes enforce their own rules, so check with your carrier if you're close to expiry.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Hong Kong
Immigration officers routinely ask for a confirmed onward ticket at the border. Have a printed or digital copy of your flight out of Hong Kong within 90 days. Without one, you risk being denied boarding or entry.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Carry a hotel confirmation or a letter from your host with their Hong Kong address and phone number. Officers rarely ask for it, but having it ready avoids delays if they do.Recommended
Proof of funds
Sufficient money for your stay
Have access to enough cash or credit for your trip — around 1,000 HKD per day is a safe benchmark. Immigration can ask to see bank statements or a credit card, though they rarely do for Swedish passport holders.Recommended
Passport validity is strictly enforced
Hong Kong immigration requires your passport to be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry. Airlines often check this before boarding. If your passport expires sooner, renew it before you fly.
Keep your departure card stub
When you arrive, you'll be given a small departure card stub. Keep it in your passport — you'll need to hand it back when you leave Hong Kong. Losing it means extra paperwork at the airport.

What happens at the border

1
Arrive at Hong Kong International Airport
After landing, follow signs to 'Arrivals' and then 'Immigration'. There are separate queues for Hong Kong residents and visitors. Join the visitor queue.
2
Fill out the arrival card
You'll receive a small white arrival/departure card on the plane or at the immigration hall. Fill it out with your passport details, flight number, and accommodation address. Keep the departure stub in your passport.
3
Present your documents at the counter
Hand over your passport, completed arrival card, and (if asked) your return ticket and hotel booking. The officer will check your passport validity, stamp it, and wave you through. The whole process usually takes 2–5 minutes.
4
Collect your luggage and proceed to customs
After immigration, pick up your bags from the carousel, then walk through the green 'Nothing to Declare' channel if you have no restricted items. You're now free to enter Hong Kong.
