Entry requirements

RequirementDetailsStatus
Valid passport
Must be valid for the duration of your stay
Your Swedish passport needs to be valid for your entire stay in Hungary. Since Hungary is in the Schengen zone, the 90/180-day rule applies across all Schengen countries — not just Hungary.Required
Return or onward ticket
Proof of departure from Schengen area
Immigration officers at Budapest Airport routinely ask for a return or onward ticket out of the Schengen zone. Have a printed or digital copy ready — they check this before stamping you in.Required
Proof of accommodation
Hotel booking or host invitation
Officers may ask where you're staying, especially if you arrive without a clear itinerary. A hotel confirmation or a signed invitation from your host covers this.Recommended
Proof of funds
Show you can support yourself
Border guards can ask for proof of sufficient funds for your stay. A bank statement or credit card showing access to around €100 per day of your trip is usually enough.Recommended
Schengen 90/180-day rule
Your 90-day visa-free stay applies to the entire Schengen Area, not just Hungary. If you've already spent 30 days in France, you only have 60 days left for Hungary and other Schengen countries combined. Track your days carefully.
Passport validity counts from entry, not departure
Hungary requires your passport to be valid for at least 6 months from the day you enter, not the day you leave. If your passport expires in 5 months, you'll be turned away at the border.

What happens at the border

1
Prepare your documents
Before you leave Sweden, check your passport validity (6+ months from entry), book your return/onward ticket, and confirm your first night's accommodation. Save screenshots of everything on your phone.
2
Arrive at Budapest Airport or border
At Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD), follow signs to 'Non-EU Passports' or 'All Passports'. Join the queue for non-Schengen arrivals. Have your passport and any requested documents ready.
3
Present your passport
Hand over your passport to the border officer. They'll check your photo, validity, and may ask about your trip purpose and length of stay. Answer honestly and briefly.
4
Receive entry stamp
The officer will stamp your passport with the entry date. This stamp starts your 90-day clock. Check the stamp before walking away — if it's smudged or missing, ask them to redo it.
5
Collect luggage and exit
After passport control, proceed to baggage claim (if you checked bags), then walk through customs (green channel for most tourists). You're now in Hungary.

Frequently asked questions

No. Sweden is in the EU, and Hungary is in the Schengen Area. You can enter visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period.
Technically, no — the visa-free stay is for tourism, business meetings, or family visits. Remote work for a foreign employer is a grey area. If you're caught, you could be fined or banned. For long-term remote work, look into Hungary's 'White Card' digital nomad visa.
Overstaying is a violation of Schengen rules. You may face a fine (typically €30–€300), a ban from re-entering the Schengen Area for up to 5 years, or both. Always track your days using the Schengen calculator app.
No. The visa-free 90-day stay cannot be extended for tourism. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for a national visa (e.g., for study, work, or family reunification) before your 90 days expire.
No. As a Swedish citizen, you don't need to register with local authorities for stays under 90 days. Just keep your passport and accommodation proof handy.
Your valid passport (6+ months validity), return/onward ticket, and first night accommodation confirmation. Travel insurance is not mandatory but strongly recommended. Keep digital copies on your phone.
Yes. There are no border checks between Schengen countries. You can drive, take a train, or fly from any Schengen country without passport control. However, always carry your passport in case of random checks.
